“Had a lot of trouble getting this to work but it was due to my version of Raspberry Pi OS missing the firmware file even though the driver is now part of the kernel.
In dmesg this manifested itself as:
[ 2.763736] mt7601u 1-1.4:1.0: Direct firmware load for mt7601u.bin failed with error -2
Obtained the firmware file by extracting it from https://www.mediatek.com/products/broadband-wifi/mt7601u (MT7601.bin) renaming (mt7601u.bin) and placing in /lib/firmware/.
Perfectly functional unit but the signal is weaker than onboard WiFi.”
“Signal is a bit average but at least it truly is plug-and-play. So many supposed raspi compatible WiFi adapters out there require installation of the drivers after a download but this one you just plug in and it just works. Fab, just what I wanted I'm more than capable of faffing about compiling drivers and all that and have done since the first pi came out but it's better that it just works out of the box. One star lost due to average signal, some other adapters have been marginally better for that.”
“I struggled for days trying to make the Pi work with a couple of cheap adapters from Amazon or eBay. I still think it's possible somehow, but I never got it. This adapter just worked immediately.”
