When SoundID Reference was introduced I couldn't A/B it with Reference 4. The two did not coexist peacefully. I was therefore unable to assess whether SoundID was worth the trouble, and chose not to upgrade. As SoundID matured it became easier to do this, and its additional capabilities seemed worth the upgrade cost.

In my case my older firewire soundcard drivers are not the best anymore, since they stopped updating them. With the older version of Reference 4 I had drop outs when I changed from DAW to a Webbrowser and had to restart the asio drivers. With the new update that magically was fixed. Very stable and runs perfect on my 7 year old pc system.

My negative feedback for the upgrade is purely related to the lack of Windows 11 compatibility. Thes severe limitation should have been communicated clearly during the purchase process

I like the result of using Sonarworks for speakers and headphones, as it makes my speakers sound better in my acoustically less-than-ideal “home studio”. However, I don’t think the new version sounds any different than the original one (though I may be wrong), and I don’t use the new features, so, for me, the upgrade seemed unnecessary. That said, I don’t regret upgrading because it caused me to re-calibrate my speakers and discover that the resulting correction curves were very close to the original ones; giving me a bit more confidence that the process is addressing real-world acoustic problems, and not just generating random EQ adjustments, LOL.
