Nothing is too much trouble, the team are charming and went out of their way to make sure we were happy. Good food and wine, comfortable rooms, great grounds to exercise the dog. Gizmo loved all the attention.

We had a three night stay at the fox and hounds with our Dalmatian Harry. Everyone was really welcoming and gave Harry lots of fuss and treats! We had a small private courtyard outside of our room which was a lovely addition. The grounds were ideal for Harry’s early morning run with a big field for exercising. The food was absolutely delicious! Lots of great things to do in the area, we enjoyed Tarr Steps, cycling along the Tarka Trail and Westward Ho! Beach.

Would you like to add any more feedback about your stay? Could do with a bit of decoration/ modernising
Good stuff: Warm welcome from staff, dog was very welcomed in, biscuits on reception, water bowl and dog towel by the front door. Big garden for playtime, would describe it as semi secure. There’s a river blocking one side and a 3 ft fence around other parts so dog escape is possible if you have a flighty pooch. Dinner and breakfast were included and both very good. Lots of choice and good portions! You can order eggs cooked freshly to go with your breakfast if you don’t fancy the buffet scrambled eggs, although no one offers them to you, you need to ask when you order your tea and coffee. Nearby walks are nice, and there’s a train station about 5 mins away so you can do little day trips to Barnstaple/ Exeter. Everything was clean, although they’re not doing mid stay room cleaning at the moment ‘because of covid’ which felt like an excuse as none of the staff were wearing masks at any point. You could ask for clean towels at reception if you needed them. Less good stuff: We had room 17, which is on the top floor, so 2 flights of stairs, the second of which is steep and narrow. When the dog needs to go out in the morning it’s a bit of a faff to get down and out the hotel. Also room has a pitched roof so being tall it was a bit hard to manoeuvre around. Window was wide open on arrival, which isn’t a great idea when you have doggy guests! Shower was a bit small. The hotel is on a main road (60mph, no verge) so if you want to walk anywhere other than the hotel garden then it’s a bit sketchy, not impossible, the roads not super busy, but there’s plenty of blind bends. You’re better off driving, not any pubs within walking distance which is a shame. We had a packed lunch and bottle of local wine included, but they weren’t offered to us at any point, had to ask for the wine specifically, and actually forgot about the lunch. Would be good to review the package you’ve ordered on check in. The local wine was very nice though! Spoke to a a couple who stayed in the “cosy double” room and it sounds like it far too small for 2 people, let alone with a dog, so avoid that. There’s a train line along the back of the hotel but there’s only about 1 train an hour so not a major problem unless you’re a very light sleeper. Overall a 4/5 for us. Don’t think we’d return purely because there’s not much nearby but made a nice break!

The room had a stained carpet, broken sash at the window, and generally needed a complete refurb. The bathroom was equipped for a wheelchair user so the mirror was very low, the wash basin was small to enable a wheelchair to pass to the toilet. The shower was not good. The breakfast was poor - dried out scrambled egg, sausage, bacon under a hot plate, basic cereals, and undrinkable coffee - really disgusting. I complained and was told by the woman on reception that I had to speak to Petspyjamas as there was nothing the Fox and Hounds could do. This was such a bad experience, I thought of trying to find somewhere else for the second night but as I was only away for a few days and everywhere was full, I ended up sticking it out. My fellow traveller had breakfast on the second morning but I didn't bother.

We recently stayed here for a short break and found it to be a very pleasant hotel in lovely surroundings. Fantastic for dogs as the garden backs directly on to woods. Despite being short-staffed the staff who were there were excellent. Friendly, polite and helpful who were clearly managed very well.

Lovely hotel with great grounds for dog walking. The room was very clean and had a welcome treats for my pooch. The bar/dining area was lovely and the food was great. The staff were super friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend staying here if you have a dog.

A wonderful member of staff, Madie, said to me when I was perusing the breakfast menu, 'What would you like? Basically, if we've got it, you can have it.' This was the atmosphere of our mini-holiday. All the staff were wonderful and couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating. The place is beautiful, a canine heaven, pretty much the same for us humans!

We stayed here last year for 3 nights & had a great time so decided we would like to return we stayed for 6 nights on this occasion and could not fault anything. We had the same room which overlooked the garden a lovely view and very pleased once again with the room. Our Shi Tzu Millie had her own bowl and mat in the room waiting for her with some treats. We took Millie with us in the restaurant at meal times and once again was a great atmosphere and was made to feel very welcome. The staff are all very friendly and polite and nothing is too much trouble. The quality of the food is of a high standard with plenty of choice. The hotel is on lovely grounds with plenty to explore which Millie enjoyed. We will definitely be returning.
