“My wife purchased a 3Litre ultrasonic cleaner for me. On arrival it was found to be too small. This unit was returned and a 6Litre ultrasonic cleaner was obtained with no trouble. Why quote a 6litre unit when it will only hold 3.5 litres of cleaning fluid and distilled water? I have tried to clean twin SU HS6 carburettors twice and the result was everything was covered in a grey film which I found difficult to remove. The cleaning process leaves a lot to be desired - not as shown in some of your photographs.”

Hi "Anonymous". In answer to the comment about the volume not being 6 Ltr. It is rated as "6 Ltr" because if you multiply the internal tank dimensions together (300 x 153 x 150mm) you get a volume of over 6 Ltr. The tank is radiused internally where the base meets the sides, thus loosing some working volume. Also the sides are very slightly tapered. If you fill the the tank to the brim it holds around 5.5 Ltr. I've physically checked it today. Regarding the dark residue on the carbs. Late May / early June we have became aware of an issue affecting a small quantity of 5 Ltr bottles of Carburettor Cleaner fluid. A reaction occurred between the fluid and some carburettor bodies, resulting in darkening of the alloy casting. We identified this was caused by accidental contamination during the manufacturing process. The problem has now been identified and rectified. The fluid is manufactured in quantities of 1,000–2,000 litres, undergoes quality control checks, and is then transferred to IBC containers for storage prior to bottling. It was during this transfer stage that contamination occurred. A handful of customers experienced the same issue as you. My apologies for this problem. Now you have let us know, we will of course send a replacement bottle FOC. Bill Pilkington Director.

“I always do my research before buying expensive items and noted that reviewers were very complimentary about Bill Pilkington. I had intended to buy a 3 litre cleaner when I looked at the clearance section, where there was a new 6 litre (presumably end-of-line)model at a lower price than the 3 litre. Purchased it and found that there was a slight leak from the drain tap. Sent an email to the retailer to see if this was just a settling in condition and was surprised not only by the same day reply, but that he had offered to send a new tap. I suggested that all I needed to do was fit a flanged nut and Bill told me which size I needed. For less than £2 the problem was fixed. When you consider how many firms are criticised for ignoring customers when something goes wrong, it was most heartening to have such a great response from Bill. This is how you gain and keep customers. So, many thanks. Dave F”
