Hi Harriet, Thanks for taking the time to review us and I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble! That doesn't sound right at all and in our experience, the clarity is very good and there should be no smudging. If you would like to you could send us some photos of the results you are getting and we might be able to offer some advice and figure out what is going wrong. When you say it takes lots of tries to get a good image; that sounds like it is probably just a case of practising I'm afraid. The stamp itself is a fairly simple instrument after all without moving parts or any variation between attempts. With practice, you should be able to get very consistent results. The only thing I can think that would cause an issue with smudging would be if the surface you are stamping is at all glossy.
