Hi Alan, I am very sorry that you were in this situation. One or two car hire firms do have a reputation for finding a way with words that results in some customers feeling compelled to buy their own in house excess insurance when this is not the case at all. I do hope you are successful in obtaining a refund from them.. To be clear the rental company does not need to 'accept' your policy - as the policies sold are a personal insurance policy that covers you against the risk of being charged by a rental firm for damage which you are responsible for. They have no connection with either the rental firm or the car you are hiring. At the desk you accept responsibility for that excess allowing the firm to take a credit card pre-authorisation equivalent to the excess you are responsible for. You do so in the knowledge that if, on your return damage is found, that you have a reimbursement policy that will cover the amount you are charged. Finally its worth pointing out over 100,000 users successfully used these policies last year, and cases such as yours are thankfully few and far between.
