18" Non-Tuneable Bodhrán with Gig Bag
Sometimes it's best to go back to where it all began. This traditional 18" Irish bodhrán  is already a classic - the simple and pure provenance of its design means that the player can experience the joy of discovering this iconic Irish drum like the first bodhrán players.

This new drum has opened up a whole new world for me. It has reopened a passion that was laying dormant for many years. The Irish culture has passions that reach deep into my soul.

This is my first bodhrán (my first ever drum actually), so I'm no expert and I'm still learning how to play. The build quality is great. The crossbar is screwed in so I think it's removable, although I'm quite happy with it in place because there's plenty of room for my hand. The bodhrán sounds great with lots of low end, particularly when open or only slightly damped. At first I couldn't get much of a range of tones out of it but my technique is improving and I can now get something resembling the "walking bass" which is characteristic of modern playing. Being a non-tuneable goatskin drum the pitch is sensitive to humidity, temperature etc. Since I'm not playing in a group (I'll eventually multitrack record some parts) I'm not worried about not being able to tune easily. 18" is rather large, especially for a first bodhrán, but it means plenty of space to move your hand around in it, and the sound is so wonderfully deep.

Little did I know that when I purchased my fantastic 18" Bodhran from McNeela Music, I would also be introduced, and encouraged to experience and learn, not only traditional Irish music, but also Irelands culture and traditional crafts, for which I am truly grateful.
