Humax FVP-5000T Freeview Play Recorder-1TB Reviews

I have always been faithful to Humax HDR recorders having owned 2 T2's and I still have a Foxsat box. I strenuously advise AGAINST buying this product (FVP-5000T). Humax have really 'lost the plot' as there are a myriad of problems with it. The HD picture is dreadful having lots of unwanted artifacts and massive 'twinkling' on things like check shirts etc. Neither of my previous Humax boxes experienced this and my Foxsat still doesn't and it's on premium channels, e.g. BBC 1 HD. About ever 15 minutes it flags me to 'Watch in HD' which isn't always convenient if I'm waiting for a local regional programme to start which of course isn't in HD. My previous Humax only flagged me once, at the begging of the program if I were watching in SD and HD is available, I find this VERY intrusive. If I set a film to record, and it happens to be shown the following day, the VP-5000T records it again, whether I've watched the first recording or not. The "MyHumax.net" web portal is in a world of it's own and won't allow deleting schedules which have long since passed and are no longer being transmitted. The Android App doesn't fair much better either and I've given up on it. After having nearly 10 years of 'perfect' TV viewing on my T2 and Foxsat with all the extras that went with them, I'm VERY disappointed with the FVP-5000T. Don't buy this product, you'll be disappointed.

Lots of problems with lost recordings and Humax turning itself off and freezing. Have to unplug from mains to reset. Believe this is being addressed in a software upgrade, but at the moment it is unfit for purpose. Long long delays with everything you want to do. Hit a button and wait to see if anything happens. The position of the indicator LEDs is ridiculous, you have to lay on the floor to see them. This is my 5th Humax and rather than evolving into better machines the opposite seems to be happening. Can't wait for a software upgrade which I hope will fix many of the problems.

Miss the ability to jump the adverts by mens of the button that moved the recording on by one minute segments, most annoying. Also won't receive the freeview channels from 87 to 99 so I he lost pbs America and th forces channel (ex vet), again most annoying, all a bit disappointing really.

I have read many reviews on the Humax FVP-5000T and of the more negative ones I found many totally unjustified. In particular I have found no issues at all with the unit being noisy, if fact quite the reverse, it's very quiet. Clearly if the product is noisy, it should be returned to Humax for an assessment and resolution. This particular product was purchased for a customer of mine and she asked me to install and set it up at her home. The way I judge a product's design is how intuitive it is to set up and operate and I can honestly report that during the whole process I didn't have to refer to the user-instructions at all - and that is very unusual. I sincerely congratulate Humax designers as they have done a brilliant job. The setup was really very simple as from initial power-up you are guided step by step until complete. After a brief tutorial with my customer, she mastered both recording of multiple programs and viewing of the recorded media very quickly. Connectivity to the internet was also a breeze and the 'On-Demand' function particularly impressive. If I have to level one tiny criticism it would be the 'Home Page' button on the Remote Control - bizarrely this is appears to be labelled 'FreeviewPlay' - why not label this as 'Home' because that is its real function - it's simply not logical to call it anything else. It took me a little time to realise this during installation because I needed to access other functions of set-up. To be fair, this function is addressed in the User Manual, however even if I had read it first, I would still have made the same comment. Overall, I'm really impressed with this unit and I agree with other reviews that this is probably the best designed 'Smart Freeview Play HD TV Recorder' Humax have produced. Following a couple of weeks after installation my customer called me to express her delight with the unit and her gratitude to me for recommending Humax to her - you just can't get a better recommendation than that!

Good: Compact unit which more or less does what is should. Bad: Activity LED located under the cabinet (yes, weird I know) which is pretty much useless if sitting on a not uncommon glass shelf. Solution, slide a piece of paper (or face down Product Manual) underneath to reflect the colour. Red - standby, Blue - on, Red and Blue together - recording. Programme guide: Defaults to transparent, suggest changing this to solid in settings. Channel ID logos very small and indistinct even on 50" TV. Programmed recording are indicated on the TV guide with a red marker. However, when setting a series to record the marker is absent. Programme detail is not shown on the TV guide (as is on my normal Freeview TV). Several button presses are required to reveal this. My unit has a problem showing BBC1 and 2 live. Picture pauses, sound continues. Other channels seem to be fine. Suggests poor signal but unit displays 100% signal strength. Watching TV with unit on standby is fine. Humax suggest this is acceptable.

Having been a user of Humax both Freesat and Freeview for many years. I decided that my Freesat was due to be changed and so purchased a new Humax FreeView. The reason was the ability to record 4 channels and watch one at the same time. The controller was so poorly designed. You cannot see that the unit is on easily. the LED is virtually hidden. The skip Ad feature was very difficult to find. As you record, if it is a multiple progam it it not obvious which program date was first, nothing at all like the RM-F01 controller which is so easy to use. Whoever designed the new controller just did not take previous users into account. My experience was so Bad I have returned the product and asked for my money back. SORRY HUMAX A VERY BADLY DESIGNED PRODUCT.

As ever this Humax box once again comes up trumps. So easy to install, set up and go. I now have three of these boxes. Each on continues to give quality viewing, with good storage. The latest box (this one) also has Frewplay, which again works well.

It does what it says on the box but is more fiddly than my last one.
