Kizer Sheepdog Mini Black Micarta Reviews

4.9 Rating 25 Reviews
Read Heinnie Haynes Reviews

The Kizer Sheepdog Mini is superb design from the knife designer and maker Chris Conaway AKA "Sheepdog Knives".
It's a cracking little knife with plenty of attitude and loads of personality! This version has a blackwash blade and a black micarta handle. It is built to use and, of course, features a Sheepsfoot blade. The micarta ensures it will only look better with age and use plus the blade has a cut out for one handed opening.
The blade is non-locking and under 7.6cm (three inches) long making it legal to carry in the UK at the owner's discretion.
The mechanism is precisely made giving a degree of resistance in the open position.

Yet again Kizer is still keeping up on top of their high standards of manufacturing with this KIZER SHEEPDOG ( none locking version) of the mini. The first and finishing of this piece is similar too knives that you can pay 3 times the price for, the quality of the contoured micarta scales is very pleasing in hand and of beautiful quality, the blade grind is bang on and so is the centring of said blade. The edge SOTB is a deceptive one on this double detent version but don't be fooled it is still very sharp just not with a toothy edge but more of a glassy like feel SO BE CARFUL and don't think it's not sharp or you might just end up with the odd half pint of wine coming out of your hand lol. On to the most serious part for a lot of people the double detent system! For anyone that has not had one before but are use to standard back spring traditional folding knives the double detent is a completely different beast. Some people feel like they are unsafe but it is all down to how you both use and hold the knife. You really need to use a pinch grip on the blade to give you that extra feeling of security, if you use a standard grip and go straight through say heavy duty cardboard you might just give it that bit of wrist which will break the open position detent and the blade might flick shut ( which no one wants to happen to their precious fingers) plus in the normal grip position ( if like me) you are someone that places a thumb or finger on the back of the blade your going to keep on breaking the detent and closing the knife.NOW don't lets what I just said put you off in anyway as the double detent is a 6/10 on this piece for pressure needed to break the detent which is a very good score. It's in no way a soft detent you can get stronger but you also got to pay a hefty amount more like the Street legal made by Tuya has the strongest I have got but that has a price of £200 and isn't that easy to get hold of I was waiting 7 years till I finally got my hands on mine and that takes over a lb of force to break which I class a 10/10 . This Kizer is a excellent piece especially for those of you that love a fidget factor you can simply finger flick or thumb flick it open and keeping you fingers out of the blades way just push the blade and it flys back closed . No bounce out at all on either opening or closing. Personally I would recommend this piece to anyone it just all depends on the person and if they don't treat it like a traditional spring back knife as it is not a fair comparison. This is a winner in my eyes and I have seen a couple in my time , so just put any apprehension aside and get one you should really love it or if not you can always go for the liner lock version which I also have but can't carry out side damn UK knife laws !! So get it and like me enjoy the pleasure of carrying it on you without worrying.

Feels very sturdy and very high quality for the price. Blade has some heft to it (relatively speaking) and feels secure when open. Bearings in the opening mechanism give a smooth action and the hole on the blade is perfectly shaped for a one handed, middle finger 'flick' opening action. I normally prefer a slightly deeper finger choil behind the blade for peace of mind when choking up as the handle is very small, but what it has is workable if you're not being careless. Either way, I'm a fan!

Great design based off the classic sheepdog, scales are stunning, very grippy and shaped to fit the hand and give confidence. 154cm is a great steel, came razor sharp and has only needed a minute on a strop after a week of light duties. Great blade shape and cuts well. Very fidget friendly without the traditional half stop slip joint. Fires in and out very snappy and find myself sat fidgeting very often. Only down side is the size of the handle when open. My pinky is left floating unless I choke up and have my first finger on the blade in the choil. But a strong friendly carry and firmly in rotation.

My Kizer Mini Sheepdog arrived from HH this morning. With a little bit of practice breaking that very firm detent it's flicking open (thumb or second finger) like a champion! The strength (and the noise!) of the detent was off-putting at first, but quickly overcome. it's drop shutty from the initial closing break, or responds well to a full snap close. The snap close is fast... so fingers being completely out of the way is a must. I like not having a flipper tab for the choke-up, but would have preferred a slightly deeper first finger space at the choil for greater safety. The micarta is nicely contoured and very comfortable. Small enough to clip into the coin pocket of my jeans. All in all, a nice compact UK friendly EDC at a reasonable price.
