I’ve been using it since 2020 and it makes a great 100% rye sourdough loaf. My starter thrives on this flour too. Great delivery service although I do occasionally make a trip to the mill as it’s in such a beautiful area. They were our lifeline in lockdown too so we’re customers for life now!

I started using Matthews' during lockdown when my regular online flour supplier ran out. I've a 5 year old sourdough starter which I've only ever fed on organic dark rye flour, so was faced with either losing it altogether or having to feed it something else. By keeping me supplied, Matthews' saved my sourdough's life, for which I've always been grateful, and write this review to return the favour. Although my original supplier has got back to normal since the end of lockdown, I no longer use them and have switched my allegiance to Matthews' to repay them for keeping my sourdough going, even though my original supplier was cheaper. I do not begrudge paying the extra as the product is excellent and makes superb bread - in addition to feeding my sourdough with it, I use it make loaves, which always turn out fantastic. Although rye and barley are my regulars, I have also tried their emmer and einkorn since they have started stocking those and they also make great loaves and other bread products. I would also praise Matthews' customer service: delivery is always timely and packaging robust, and they've always been quick to apply my monthly discount retrospectively on the several occasions when I've forgotten to apply it at online checkout. All in all, I could not recommend this company or its flour more highly.

This organic stone ground rye flour has an excellent flavour. I have even made my own sourdough starter from it and my bread is so tasty. I don't need to mix it with any other flours.
