I looked around at air purifiers and read various reviews. My initial thoughts were for the Blueair 480i. I hadn't bought such a machine before so decided to use the call back service from AllergyCosmos. A very helpful and knowledgeable member of staff took me through the options and suggested I might consider an IQAir machine as well. A comparison between the filters used by the two types of machines, and further reviews, left me in no doubt that the IQAir HealthPro 250 was the one to buy for my needs (admittedly it is more expensive). Some reviews mention that the filters are expensive, this is true but a quick calculation of the annualised cost for IQAir versus Blueair shows that there is not much difference in running costs even though the IQAir uses a superior HyperHEPA filter in the final stage of its three massive filters. The Blueair 480i has Wi-Fi connectivity and a sensor whereas the IQAir does not. Wi-Fi connectivity is nice to have but not essential, the HealthPro 250 has a fairly good timer in any case. I don't know how effective a sensor can be when it is so close to the machine's output of filtered air. Still I wanted to know the quality of air in my flat as well as outside (from a monitoring station) so I bit the bullet and ordered the IQAir AirVisual Pro at the same time (reviewed separately under the product on the AllergyCosmos web site). The HealthPro 250 is powerful enough to purify the air at speed 6 in quick time even in a fairly large room, the noise at this setting is a bit like a good quality vacuum cleaner. The machine can then be set to a lower speed, generally I have it at speed 1 overnight in the bedroom and it is pretty quiet. The machine is barely larger than absolutely necessary thanks to the way the components are housed. Still it is quite large and fairly heavy (not surprising, just one of the filters has 2.5kg of activated carbon). I find it easy to move the machine around my flat, having attached the optional casters. Moving it up and down stairs would be possible using the handle on the top but probably a little difficult. To sum up I have been very happy with both purchases and feel that the extra cost over alternatives has been justified, which is not to say that the Blueair machine would not give good service (going by other reviews).

The unit appears to significantly reduce effects of environmental factors - much better than my current unit
