TL;DR: Pros - tutors very responsive and helpful; loads of careers opportunities and advice; comprehensive course materials and multiple ways of learning. Cons - classes segregated from each other due to covid; lectures all online; both gave feeling of being isolated I have just finished the GDL course at Ulaw and overall I have been very happy with my experience. Best of all has been the attention of my tutors and lecturers. Nearly all of them responded to my email questions within a day and all of them eventually provided thorough answers and responded to all of my follow-up questions. The day before my land law exam my tutor responded to all 13 of my emails within 10 minutes of each of them; the day before my equity exam, my tutor responded to a lengthy question at 23.20 - they were both very dedicated to helping their students out! In class, all my questions (there were many of them) were answered such that I never felt any guilt or trepidation about asking them. Ulaw also provides great opportunities to add to your CV: they have a very helpful 'employability service' which is available to help with CVs and applications, a weekly careers email bursting with opportunities (you should read it and take advantage of them, if you join!), and a pro bono team which sets up and gives feedback on pro bono opportunities too; I also ran for and played a role on the SU which gave me valuable experience dealing with committees and raising concerns of fellow students. The course materials which Ulaw provides are comprehensive and help you learn in multiple ways, from reading and doing activities in textbooks, to watching lectures, going through presentations and doing tests online, to accessing library materials in person or online. I did have a couple of problems with Ulaw. 1. lack of contact with other students: due to covid restrictions, all the GDL classes were segregated which meant we hardly knew anyone outside of our 10 person class; there were also very few social activities put on for students (though this can be largely put down to covid restrictions). 2. Ulaw's policy for the foreseeable future is that all lectures are to be held online. This was convenient in that I didn't have to commute into uni an extra day each week, but it also meant that I didn't get to mingle with other students in my year which was quite isolating, as well as the fact that studying from home led to more distractions than would be present in a lecture theatre.

Overall I think ULaw is a great university with fantastic tutors! However, I have at times been disappointed with how difficult it can be to reach assessments, and the fact that they don’t respond to any emails. I also wish there was a wider variety of assessments for the LPC, rather than just having them all be exam-based as this doesn’t reflect the reality of what it will be like in practice.

Ulaw has experienced tutors and also a strong support system to help you through your academic journey, albeit you have to be ready to do the work yourself. I studied during the pandemic which wasn’t easy at all but the student service, welfare team, tutors etc all came through for me and I got my LLM degree!

The standard of teaching at ULaw is excellent and with great support from the careers team, it really helps students to become practical professionals as well as learning the theory. Communication is not great from an admin side but tutors are always willing to help out.

ULaw is progressive and between my time there and now, considering the beginnings of setting up locations in Berlin, the quality has only gotten better and I think students can really benefit from taking advantage of the opportunities here.

I did the MA in Law online. Overall its a good course. The online is difficult to manage though and sometimes you feel that you are just sent the books and you are teaching yourself. Some tutors are great, go the extra mile, others have no interest. The course was a good option to do during Covid, but for a better experience, I would suggest either the university amends its online course to be more interactive, or to take an in person course if you can. You miss out on a lot when you end up reading from a book on your own. The IT issues as well with the university were never ending, even during exams and that was unfortunate and stressful, though eventually resolved. Overall good course, but management and communication could be greatly improved.

The Moorgate campus, where I studied the GDL, was light, airy and modern. The teaching was generally good, occasionally great and sometimes poor. Tutors were able to deliver the set workshops, which are high quality, but were not good at explaining what needed to be on the page. My academic background strongly indicates that with better instruction I was perfectly capable of a Distinction which, as a career changer, was the ticket I needed. I managed a Commendation but as a former teacher, I am clear that this was largely a result of a lack of understanding of the staff about the difference between 'delivery' (good to adequate) and 'teaching' (a skill which many tutors did not embody). The marking guide they kept pointing us to was beyond useless. The GDL is a difficult balance to strike as it basically represents three undergrad years in a nine-month course. The course is good for people who already know what they are doing, which I would for the next level up. That said, I would basically recommend the university. The careers team are dedicated and very practical; there are many opportunities for pro bono and for finding out about the profession. The university dealt well with the pandemic from my point of view, and I'd definitely return to do the LPC if the opportunity arose.
