Riverside is a newly renovated 18th century house, set in a terrace of pastel shade cottages just behind a small beck and strip of green, complete with a weeping willow. The owners have taken great care to create a lovely homely feel and to ensure comfort throughout. Imagine returning here after a day on the fells - fire up the log burner, get the kettle on or pop a cork and sit back, perhaps with the thought of wandering over the road to the village pub (beer garden if it's warm...).

Downstairs is decorated in muted tones and divided between the cosy lounge, and the open plan kitchen / dining area. The lounge has a great logburner, smart TV, and comfortable seating for four. The kitchen has contemporary style fittings with good storage cupboards and worktops. There is a comprehensive inventory of equipment and all the conveniences you would expect. Upstairs to the two bedrooms, one Kingsize and the other is a standard double; both rooms have solid wood furniture. The house bathroom has a very good-size walk-in shower and a crisp modern look, with tiling throughout.Guests who may have a pet allergy can be assured that dogs are not permitted here.

Although it is possible to park right in front of the property, it is much easier to park on the free village car park which is just 50 metres away. The front of the house faces east, so you can step out in the morning for an al fresco brew on the bench, and enjoy the sound of birdsong, the breeze in the weeping willow, and the tinkle of the flowing beck. To the rear there is small table and chairs (bistro set).

If you've never ventured this far north in the Lake District, you've missed a trick. Here, in Caldbeck, you have a beautiful old village that has retained its pub, shop and a cafe, and is surrounded by gorgeous rolling hills and is within easy reach of the northern fells such as Skiddaw and Blencathra. What you don't have in this neck of the woods, are crowds. You will be delighted by the empty roads, and a more traditional rural way of life, when compared to the busier parts of the Lakes. Check out the view of the setting for Riverside, and you can imagine yourself in one of those idyllic days in England that you'll always remember. Friendly locals are happy to see you here and you'll wonder why you've never been here before...

We stayed in Riverside for 3 nights in May, and can't think of a better place to stay when visiting the northern lakes. Caldbeck is a peaceful village, so untouristy compared to other places around. We made the most of the walks directly from the village, with no need to get in the car. Helen and Steve provide an excellent information guide, a model of how to write one, including 6 local walks described in detail with maps. Don't miss walking up the beck to the bobbin mill. It was also a short drive to bigger fells and we had a lovely walk up Blencathra. There are fascinating places to visit nearby, we strongly recommend the Church of St Mary in Wreay, designed by Sarah Losh. We didn't manage to fit in Hesket Newmarket; that's for another time. Riverside cottage is a warm, welcoming house to come back to after a day on the fells. The beds are so comfy, the kitchen is really well laid out and had everything we needed.
