Brookside Cottage Reviews

Brookside Cottage is a wonderful 3-bedroom cottage that overlooks Maulds Meaburn village green, where you can collect conkers from the ancient Chestnut trees in Autumn or watch a Heron diving for fish in the lovely Lyvennet river, which winds lazily right through the village. Perhaps a horse and trap trundling past on a summer evening. Springtime is uniquely special; listen to the sheep and bounding lambs as they roam free range on the green.

If required, the self-catering holiday cottage benefits from a parking space to the front with additional unrestricted parking on the lane. To the rear is a spacious garden area surrounded by farmland. Inside, the property has been decorated to a high standard throughout to provide a comfortable stay.

About the Location
Maulds Meaburn, described by Hunter Davies as “... one of the most beautiful villages in the country“, sits in the beautifully picturesque Lyvenett Valley, and it is an extraordinary village steeped in history with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways… yet only 10 mins from the M6 (Shap Junction 39) or A66 (Appleby).
The range of chocolate-box cottages and larger stone dwellings are dotted along the sides of the valley, all overlooking the village green (with grazing sheep and lambs in spring) and the Lyvenett River.
The local community-owned pub, The Butchers Arms, is a peaceful 15-minute stroll along the river.

Brookside is set in a lovely quiet location and the kitchen is well equipped. We arrived during a heavy downpour and noticed that there was a leak in the landing ceiling. One call to the owner and the roofer arrived next day to fix the problem. Cottage can get cold however you have the choice of two fires or just need to turn the thermostat to turn heating on. Cottage is very clean, plenty of dishwasher tabs available too. We did not use the stairs leading from back door to top patio as they were covered in green moss/algea and were quite slippery. Bedrooms are spacious. Master bedroom has one opening window and condensation builds up quickly in bathroom and bedroom making the room smell a bit damp? The entrance hall with dining room is nice to sit in when the sun is shining. Couple of things to point out...nowhere to hang your coats. Simple coat stand would remedy this. The upper patio is is covered in weeds and could do with a tidy up. The bench in front of cottage could do with replacing.

We had a wonderful time at Brookside Cottage! The arrival information was extremely clear, self check-in was seamless. The cottage is well equipped and so cosy, my felt right at home. There is a charming brook just outside of the cottage with lots of sheep wandering around. It is just the cutest setting and an absolutely wonderful break from the city! We cannot wait to visit again!

I stayed here many years ago when the owner was letting it out to family/friends, and it's nice to see all the improvements that have been made! Lovely comfortable beds and sofas, the kitchen was stocked with all necessary equipment and more, helpful manuals provided for all the appliances, good quality linens and towels, clear handbook about the cottage and local area. We really enjoyed being able to relax and feel at home. Only improvement would be having information about exactly what plastic is recyclable as every council accepts different types! (i.e. is it all plastic or just bottles/yoghurt pots/plastic trays?)

This is a gorgeous cottage - surprisingly spacious rooms and extremely well appointed and comfortable. The kitchen had absolutely everything we needed. The village is so lovely - sheep and lambs trotting by outside the window, the river, the swings, a great walk to Butcher's Arms in Crosby Ravensworth for drinks and supper. The only negative was that it's a very cold cottage - when the heating goes off, it gets chilly very very quickly (lthough there is a log burner with a starter pack for 2 fires). A guide to changing the heating system would be welcome! All in all, a really lovely place to spend the Easter weekend and explore the local area. It's a great stepping stone to the Lake District.
