Overview:

Keepers Cottage is a wonderful traditional stone cottage situated in Grisedale Bridge, on the lake-side of the A592, just a short stroll from the quaint villages of Glenridding and Patterdale. This Ullswater self-catering cottage has been recently been refurbished throughout to restore the original wooden floor and exposed wooden beams. This self-catering cottage is ideal for walkers wishing to explore Ullswater and the Lake District or for couples looking for a romantic getaway sipping a glass of red in front of the roaring fire. Dogs are also welcome to stay at only £5 per pet per stay.

The self-catering cottage is perfect for walkers because you have many popular walks leading off from the doorstep including Place Fell, the Helvellyn Range with Helvellyn and Birkhouse Moor. If walking isn't your cup of tea, then why not hire a small motorised pleasure boat from St Patricks Boat Landing, 5 minutes walk away, or jump aboard one of the Ullswater Steamers, 10 minutes walk from the cottage and sail up to Pooley Bridge, Aira Force or Howtown.

Fancy eating out, then you will enjoy the local pubs, hotel bars, tea shops and cafes, all within walking distance. If you wish to go further afield, then why not use the bus service, with a bus stop situated at the end of the lane. Ambleside, Windermere, Keswick and Penrith are all well-within a hours drive from the cottage.

The Cottage includes:

Ground Floor

One private parking space to the front of the cottage.
Open plan living room and kitchenette with a dining table for two, large log-burning stove, TV with DVD player. A door leading to the rear enclosed garden.
The kitchenette offers an oven and hob, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, fridge and freezer, crockery and cutlery. Washing machine in the outhouse.

First Floor

Kingsize double bed with bedside tables either side.
Modern bathroom with basin, loo and walk-in shower.
Fabulous views to the front and rear of the cottage, looking onto the fells.

All the windows have been replaced with double glazing and storage heaters are located on both floors and with the fire burning, the cottage is wonderfully cosy and warm! Keepers Cottages is a popular choice for visitors looking for self-catering dog-friendly cottages near Ullswater.

Keeper’s cottage is so cosy and a little haven of peace. It is a charming traditional cottage and looks out at the mountains on one side and with a view of the lake on the other. It is perfect for one or two people.

The cottage was cold. Heating instructions were impossible to decipher even though we are tech savvy. The 4 person settee sank in the middle so that you had to sit at an angle all the time. Ground floor space in the cottage is at a premium so why have a 4 person settee and an armchair in a 2 person cottage? The large settee restricts the safe use of the kitchen area. The oven is less than a metre from the settee. Anyone sitting on the settee could be hurt by accidental hot food spillages. The fridge is minute -possibly ok for one person for a few days. We had to pull the fridge out of its 'cubby hole' to be able to access the tiny freezer compartment. A standard sized fridge is a minimum requirement for 2 people for a week. The varnished stairs are a slip hazard. Despite hanging on to the handrail my wife sipped and banged her head. The ground floor area is very cramped. There is no occasional table for putting down newspapers, laptop etc. There is no room for it. You have to be content with a stool. The ground floor area and outside area is cluttered with many pot animals- be prepared for a mini zoo. The upstairs bedroom is roomy as is the adjacent bathroom. There is no wall mirror but there is a small hand mirror. The wash basin tap spout is short so you can only get your hands partly under it and in doing so water runs along part of the adjoining worktop and soaks whatever is on it. The location of the cottage is good and the carparking space is much larger than a standard car space.

Dear Mr Mason, We're sorry your expectations weren't met during your stay at Keepers Cottage. It's challenging to please everyone's tastes, and while we and the owners appreciate all feedback, the cottage has also received lots of positive comments. The cottage is small, but these very old cottages are, and the owners have made every effort to provide the comforts and amenities expected by guests in the limited space. The stairs are standard wood stairs and treads with a mahogany finish, and there is a secure handrail. We are very sorry your wife had an accident and truly hope she is okay. The owners will look at options available without ruining the aesthetics of the wood finish or the cottage. The fridge is a standard-size under-counter model. We appreciate your feedback about it sliding back on the wooden floor, and the owners will consider adding an attachment to prevent this. Finally, it is regrettable that you didn't contact us during your stay about these reported issues, such as the heating, so we could have had the opportunity to assist you at the time and make your stay more enjoyable.

We loved our stay at this cottage. It was beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean, and incredibly quiet. The location couldn't be better for hiking, with some of the best routes starting right from the doorstep.

Arrived late as notified to owners and unfortunately the heating had not been switched on anywhere in the cottage. The instructions were clear that this would have happened. Given temperature was around zero , this made the property incredibly cold and difficult to warm up. Owners responded promptly and cottage itself was well equipped and located but this was completely unacceptable given late hour of arrival and temperature and at odds with instructions.

A lovely, cozy cottage a short walk from the pub. The perfect place to celebrate our anniversary and see in the new year. Could have done with a spare teatowel.

The cottage was beautiful very clean and had all facilities needed for a week stay over Christmas 2024 , the cottage is cosy warm and felt so homely and we were greeted with a festive decor , a Christmas tree and gifts which were so kind and thoughtful. The shower room was amazing and obviously the log fire made the perfect setting in such before surroundings in Ullswater. I cooked every day and everything you needed equipment wise was provided to do so . It was very quiet not a sound could be heard at night and that’s with the window open! It was bliss.
