About This Cottage:

The Old Pump House is an ideal self-catering holiday home near Millom. It lies on the banks of the Black Beck and was formerly one of the main pumping stations supplying water to the ironworks. This detached, single-storey, country holiday retreat nestles in the village of The Green, a sleepy village off the Millom road, 4½ miles from the ancient market town of Broughton.

The village, like many others in South Cumbria, was not always so tranquil. It lies at the northern end of an ancient ford crossing Duddon Sands. Long before the arrival of the railway, Irish and Scottish cattle were offloaded up the coast at Whitehaven. From there herders led them south, past Black Combe and down the Whicham Valley, to gather at The Green ready for the drive across the River Duddon’s treacherous sands to market.

This now sleepy village is the ideal place to come and relax beside the river, or you can use it as the perfect springboard for exploring the Lakes.

Beach 6 miles. Shop and restaurant 5 miles, The Punch Bowl Pub ½ mile. Green Road railway station, is just 200 yards up the road giving access to the stunning coastal route.

Inside:

The layout of the cottages is all on one level and comprises of:

The living room: With French doors overlooking the river, original beams and wooden & slate floor and the large log burning stove.
The dining room / kitchen: Again with wooden beams and slate floor, dining table for six, oil-fired Range Cooker, separate fridge and freezer, microwave and other modern appliances.
Utility Room / WC: A loo and basin as well as the washing machine, ironing board etc.
Bathroom: Bath with overhead shower, basin and loo.
Master Bedroom: Large king-size bed with separate double sofa bed, TV, sliding door out onto the patio and looking onto the river.
Bedroom 2: Double Bed (5ft) with TV, window overlooking the river.
Bedroom 3: Bunk beds (two single beds), TV and window overlooking the river.

Outside:

The Old Pump House benefits from a large patio area with BBQ, overlooking the river and onto the farm opposite. This is especially ideal for sunny days where you can relax on the cushioned garden furniture or have perhaps dine at the six-seat outdoor dining table and listen to the running water or the birds singing.
To the front of the property, there is parking space for up to three cars as well as storage space for bicycles. There are plenty of walks nearby too!

Things to note:

Home shopping is available in the area.
Oil, electricity, bed linen, towels and an initial supply of logs is included.
A travel cot (without bedding) and high chair is available.
WiFi is available throughout the house.
The river, although only a gentle flow, is immediately next to the property, separated by a 4ft wall. Please ensure that children are not left unattended outside or allowed to climb on the wall.

Couldn’t have wished for a nicer place to stay. Had everything we needed and more, very quiet and peaceful, which is just what we needed.

We had a lovely stay at the pump house. The location is quiet with the constant soothing sound of the river next to the house. the house is very warm and has all mod cons. The log burner and optional hot tub were an added bonus. The. views from the house are uninterrupted hills and sheep fields. the pub up the road (Punch Bowl) serves excellent food. All in all a great property and would stay again.

Well equipped cottage in beautiful location with lovely views. Hot tub is great after day walking at little villages or if you fancy a walk to the Stanley Ghyll Waterfall ( which would recommend)

Absolutely loved our stay here. The location was great, with beautiful countryside and only a short walk from the train station, which allowed us to venture further afield without having to take the car. Lots of home from home comforts and loved the hot tub to relax in. Would love to stay here again.

The Old Pumphouse is a perfect base for a stay in the Lakes. The house is very well equipped with everything you might need. Beautifully presented with a cosy ‘home from home’ feel; there were even fresh flowers, biscuits, coffee and bubbly for our arrival. The perfect house if you have a dog as there are no stairs and a small grassy area outside. The patio is fully decked out with a seating area and a table. The hot tub is huge and maintained regularly by the owner Tracey to who nothing is too much trouble. It is a very quiet area but a great base for exploring. Thoroughly recommended and we hope to return.

Really beautiful, comfortable cottage. The location is perfect for a relaxing break. The position of cottage next to a brook, then field all with backdrop of the big hills really is idyllic. Big hot tub was a brilliant addition. Tracey the owner was really nice and accessible if you had a question..would recommend this place.
