Live Mealworms Reviews

There's no doubt that more bird lovers would feed live mealworms to their garden birds if only they could get over the sight of all those wriggling little creatures. The rewards of feeding live mealworms far outweigh any misgivings you may have about their wiggle, and the benefits to birds - in particular during the nesting and fledgling season - can be spectacular and can make the difference between survival or otherwise.

I have to confess, at first, I felt a little squeamish about giving the birds live food, but when I put some of the mealworms on a suspended tray, the house sparrows flew in immediately, clearly eager to give their young a more nourishing foodstuff. There is a paucity of insects, so I felt justified in providing a protein-rich food of this kind!

They are very popular with the robins & blackbirds and keep well in the fridge. The (new?) packaging also means they can be put through the letterbox (although try not to tread on the package as you come in through the door, as I did!)

Bought some live mealworms has I can't keep up with all the bird's thought it would go a bit further aswell as the waxworms I keep getting, gosh the bird's go crazy, it's funny to watch the starlings with there young now there brilliant at catching I can play catch with them, trouble is all the other bird's struggle getting any, I try hiding them split into different feeling places, so the robin let's me know when it's waiting and a certain blackbird does, I seem to be out there hour's trying to make sure all gets a bit of something, I could go on for ever, The mealworms are fresh and come well secure, quality and good value.

I hadn't purchased these before so as well as the worms I invested in the recommended feeder with a protective dome which can be lowered to keep out larger birds. These worms certainly attracted the birds which within seconds started to arrive and started a feeding frenzy. Unfortunately they were all larger birds with the starlings rapidly working out how to perch and put their heads over the lip to grab some worms. A herring gull then flew up to the feeder and although it couldn't get in it managed to set the feeder swinging which caused some worms to fall out. A pair of jackdaws developed a similar technique so our two robbins never got a look in. I changed tactics and placed the worms under some shrub cover and at first the robins did managed to feed on them but despite their normal aversion to undergrowth, first the jackdaws and then the herring gulls succumbed to the temptation and disappeared into the undergrowth so I've decided to abandon this feed, hence the 3 stars!

Right mealworms, wrong birds? The mealworms arrived very promptly by Royal Mail delivery. The looked really plump and healthy. Their squirming mass isn't for the squeamish but they became more comatose in a sealed container in the fridge, they became more active when put outside. The only problem was that they were put out in a shallow dish on top of a wall close to bird feeders on a tree but no interest was shown in them despite the regular presence of sparrows and tits and occasional visits from blackbirds. After a day a magpie took some and was the only taker for days until all were gone. Don't understand it but it might be worth buying a small quantity initially to see what the take up will be. No fault with the product as far as I can tell, looked very good.
