This is a good device spoilt by bad documentation which primarily is concerned with interfaceing to the device and very little on the functionality. A proper Datasheet would go a long way to rectifying this, one that describes the registers and thier bit settings. Also there are no details on the units of measure only the range, the signal strength and range precision are just abitary values. There appears to no details on the CAN interface at all. In addition it is not possible to change the mode of the interface without the use of a seperate program running on a PC, details should be available to do this within the application software.

As a commuting cyclist I regularly get close passed by cars, its very annoying and dangerous so I thought I would create my own system of recording these events. I decided to use an existing Pi Zero coupled with a Waveshare UPS hat to provide portability. The mini time of flight laser sensor gives me 0 to 7m plenty of distance for what I need, I modified the example that came with the TOF to only record passes that contravene the legal minimum and now have a working prototype, at the moment it records a timestamp and distance in mm. The Mini TOF works very well and is easy to configure.
