“The official Waveshare documentation isn't all that helpful, but once you follow the right tutorial its possible to get the screen running well. It was the ESP32_Display_Panel examples that finally got me to a working screen with lvgl.”

“An interesting board. It took some effort to get working with platformio due to the weird expander and display/touchscreen and no online docs. The i2c port is wired with vcc and 0v reversed from that on a grove connector so beware, and the i2c port is set to 3v rate than 5v. You can set a solder jumper to move it to 5v logic but this causes huge issues with the touchscreen which shares the same i2c pins. Shame they did not use a separate i2c bus for internal Vs external. The battery charging circuit is also very temperamental and has no battery voltage monitor set up. Well, they did put a voltage divider on the battery vcc to measure but it just goes to a test point on the board and not to any ADC pin. Finally the usb connectors are inset behind the LCD so trying to create an enclosure for this is super challenging. So generally it's a fun board but not especially usable in real life.”
