“Arrived in a couple of days. The modem works perfectly. Wanted it to send and receive SMS text messages. I installed Minicomm on a Raspberry Pi 4 and with the appropriate configuration using raspi-config and some SIM alignment issues it worked first time.
I would ask that some further instructions be provided for correctly aligning the SIM card. This was aggravated for me because the EE SIM I purchased from Tesco fell apart when I took it from the packet. The modem takes a full size SIM so I had to carefully re-assemble it. Just need to get it working under program control.”
“This is tricky to get up and running. Most of the material available via the manufactors is aimed at people who don't need advice and ThePiHut has stopped issuing thier own instructions (which used to be excellent and are missed).
Thankfully ChapGTP and I sorted it out eventually. Now works well as part of a system monitoring incoming text messages for set combinations of phone number and message and giving a suitable alarm.”
“It’s taking some time to get my head around the impressive range of “AT” commands supported by this device but so far I’m very pleased with my purchase. I had it making and receiving calls and text messages very quickly, considering I had very little idea what I was doing! I can see that this device will be able to do what I need it to and much more. It is exceptionally good value for money and I will definitely shop here again.”
“I use this with my Python Bot software to handle OTPs. Great for handling text messages. Very simple to set up. Be warned that I had this sitting on my Pi Zero W and it would crash when a text message came in.
You need an external antenna. Lucky for me I bought the GSM Antenna with Magnetic Base (3m) - cost under £3.00”
“No problems getting this connected to my raspberry pi and communicating with the hat via MINICOM using the AT command set. However, BEFORE purchasing this that I FAILED to check if GSM (LG2) was supported in my area of the US, it isn't. The hat continuously flashed once per sec and the AT command 'AT+CSQ' returned 0,0. After some online searching (wikipeida) I found that the cell towers here have depreciated GSM LG2 signal.
