“Bought it to understand what coding is all about.
30 years ago, I learnt how to program using the BBC Basic. When I went out into the real world however, I never used a computer for about a decade. Then had to learn how to use windows.
Now there's all this talk about coding, which via the Code Bug website appears to be all about dragging and dropping coloured blocks to make the device's LED's flash in patterns.
Not too sure how this could be applied to a real world application as yet, but it's quite easy to grasp, and I'm sure kids will enjoy it.
I do find it a little ironic however that the Raspberry Pi Epiphany browser doesn't appear to support the Code Bug site.”
“We have a set of 15 Codebugs that get used in Year 5 and Year 6. They are just brilliant - good value for money and easy to use. We lost 2 to breakage in the first week because their microUSB ports snapped off but glueing the rest has resulted in no more losses. We have recently added Colour stars, which has opened up a whole new range of possibilities for coding loops and conditionals. The website is fine as long as you have some method for your children to register on the site, otherwise they can't save their code (an off-line option would be great). Shame there is no random function and shame the inputs don't have analogue capability. Overall though, well worth having.”
“An excellent little device that my 6 year old son and I are enjoying. It's fairly simple to use, although dad has to do the download (slightly tricky for a 6 year old). I'm sure he'll get the hang of it. However, it's a good introduction that can lead on to the Raspberry Pi.”
“this codebug is a very convenient piece of hardware to show kids that they can act on real world through software.
The only thing I will appreciate in the future is a off-line development environment. I often have places where our kid's workshop doesn't have Internet access.”
