“The animated eyes bonnet made it easy to add animation to halloween decorations. PiHut made it easy to find the instructions to configure by providing links to the AdaFruit tutorials.
There were two glitches:
First, I ordered two sets and unfortunatly they were both missing one of the displays. I contacted PiHut support and true to their word, there was no muss of fuss and they shipped the missing parts.
The second, I had a Pi3B+ at home and for some reason I could not get the software to work on it so, I swapped it out for a Pi3 and it worked flawlessly. I I'll revisit this when I put the second kit together.”
“They are a fun pair. Installation was easy based on the Adafruit documentation. I managed to first overlook that to use the 240x240 TFT displays, you need to select IPS and not TFT when asked to select the screen type. Resulting in a strange offset and garbled image, but second time 'round I managed to read things properly :).
I was hoping for a little bit easier modding of the input. I want the eyes to follow you based on a face detection model, but still need to figure out the easiest way to not go for the random _or_ joystick input but custom code. And similar for the blinking and pupil dilation.
But in general: good fun, good quality and works out of the box!”
“The instructions are very comprehensive and contain a big hint to do the software install using a Pi4 with ethernet. I did not take the hint and failed to install the software on several different Pi’s using Wi-Fi all failed! I then tried a Pi400 on ethernet and it worked first time.
I made a prototype using the delivery box and found that the screens are not aligned with the backing PCB and appear wonky with respect to the mounting holes.
Enjoyable project.”
“Amazing little gadget perfect for making props and masks for Halloween/Cosplay. Works straight out of the box and adding the semi-spheres and holders really added to the look.
Very easy to programme the eyes to different styles, I selected the Dragon Eyes for what I needed. (Found that the voice changer option was set to 'true' in the Dragon Eyes config file, so changed that out to 'false' to get even better performance than the attached video shows).
Can run off a battery for portable use and amazing value for money for what this offers. I haven't even started on what these can do when you programme the buttons and add microphone/speakers to use the inbuilt voice changer function. You can even split the eyes apart and add a cable to get them further away from each other.
Very fast delivery from Pi-Hut on these and very good packaging to protect them as well. Great service!”
