I've set it up with my raspberry to log light levels next to my plants, and it does an excellent job.

I have been using this sensor for about two years in my architectural research and teaching using scale models with the Raspberry Pi. Had tried the TSL2561, which is also a very good sensor, but if you need to deal with direct sunlight, the max of 88KLux on the TSL2591 is what you need. The TSL2561 max's out very quickly. Various python scripts available online allow the sensor to be calibrated by adjusting three coefficients. A bit tricky but with a bit of time you can get great results. I used a Konica-Minolta T-10MA as a calibrated reference and achieved between +/- 3-5% at illuminances between 150lux and 68KLux with and without direct sunlight. A good quality diffusing material mounted in front can achieve good cosine correction to mimic the eye. For the price this sensor is excellent and my go-to until something better comes along.
