“I bought one of these, with an external antenna and the GPS case. I am very pleased with it and intend to buy another. Note that the hat is mounted so that its components and logo can be seen. The Pi pins pass through the board to reach the socket. Read the online instructions.
If you are using the GPS case then use its plastic stand-offs, not the metal ones with the hat.
The Uputronics instructions fail to say that you must activate the Pi serial hardware.
For better instructions, web search for "Phil's Occasional Blog Pi Stratum 1 NTP" without the quotes.”
“Works very well. Requires a little bit of code writing for the GPS HAT to play with the the astronomy program that I couple it with, but that's a part of the reason that we build Raspberry Pi's.”
“Easy installation and works great. The real miracle is that it arrived from the UK 2 days after I ordered (by DHL Exoress). I got the antenna (which also works well) and the case, which left a little to be desired (see my separate review of the case), but, after some adjustments, the case did its job, as well. Thanks to PiHut for quality products and swift delivery.”
“Stunning GPS, particularly it’s PPS capability, if you want the most accurate clock possible then this the device to get, just make sure you get an active antenna too.”
“After assembling and following Phil's Occasional Blog on setting it up. I now have my own Stratum 1 server. With it in the HAT Case on the Desk, the the CPU temp hovers around 60C. I have since relocated it so it sits above a low velocity cpu fan in a 1U computer case and the temps are now 10C cooler.”
“Uputronics have produced a fantastic GPS HAT with PPS functionality for the RPi, although if used with the RPi4 and in the GPS compatible case - a strong suggestion would be to give your HAT a hair cut.
There's a massive section of unused board between the black connection strip and the memory backup capacitor - cutting a large rectangular or 'L' shape section out of this area, massively assists air flow from the hot running RPi4 beneath. There's easily enough space to create a large window through the HAT so that there's space for the hot air off heatsinks to rise.
See attached pictures for the idea (shame Uputronics hadn't considered this ......)
