“I bought the Pi 5 primarily to see if I could use it as a Linux desktop attached to an old TV. The Pi 4 had been too slow to develop on and it's YouTube performance was awful. I had hope the speed bumps here would have removed my number on gripe with the 4, but video decode is still bad compared to almost anything else available today. YouTube 60 fos content drops so many frames. 4k content is like a slideshow. Even 720P 60fps drops frames. I don't know why they couldn't have included in hardware decoder blocks in their new chip.
Additionally, even though the Pi foundation have been claiming that the Pi 5 can output 2 monitors at 4K 60fps. I found that the Pi 5 became a slideshow when alt tabbing between windows at 4K, and even doing tasks such as minimizing and maximising windows. The frames per seconds were less than 10 by my rough estimate. Yes, the output is 4k, yes, when moving smaller windows around its 60fps, but when using it normally as a desktop, it simply feels slugging.
At the end of the day, I can work around it. I can play 480P 30fos content on YouTube. I can set my desktop resolution to 1080P.
I do have to deduct a star though for the video performance at 60fps and for the 4k animation performance. It's simply not there.
At the end of the day too the CPU performance is excellent, and there are so many applications for the pi, present and future.”
“The delivery of the set was perfect. Well packaged, in time, the administration by Pimoroni in good order. There were nice informative emails. I can strongly recommend this company! And now: enjoying the power of the RPI5!”
“Great little single board computer, it will get better and better just like the rpi4 did. I am still getting to grips with the nvme boot but am sure it will work. Should be fantastic for retro games in a while once the retro pie folk get going on it, if you liked the pi4 you're going to love this, by the way get a cooler.”
“I was after a small device with low power consumption to run an astrophotography rig that would be battery powered. I coupled the Pi 5 up with an NVMe board and the whole unit works perfectly. I managed a six hour sesión the other night before cold got the better of me and the Pi 5 worked flawlessly throughout. It’s not really up to processing the images, but I have a Ryzen 7950x based PC for that.”
