“The RPi4 does the jobs for which I bought it (as a media server in the day and a backup server at night) well, although the CPU does get hot under load, as many have reported. Some form of cooling solution seems mandatory (I've used the fan SHIM) if you want to do anything serious with the device without the device throttling back its CPU to self-protect. Something - config, hardware or OS - I haven't worked out what yet - causes occasional kernel panics when reading a LUKS-encrypted external HD over USB2. The RPi4 is not just entertaining (if you're a bit of an IT nerd like me) but it's powerful enough to be genuinely useful too.”
“Decided to get the pi with just a case and used an old phone charger and microsd for power and the OS. Everything worked fine and it is currently set up as a headless pi with VNC.”
