Makita DUM604ZX 18v LXT Cordless Grass Shears Body Only with Hedge Trimmer Blade
The Makita DUM604ZX LXT Grass Shears are designed to suit the needs of home users, landscapers, nurseries and gardeners. They have a stain-free shear blade surface of glittering silver obtained by non-electrolysed nickel plating that features high anti-abrasion surface for a long lasting coating. The blade systems on the UH201D Mobile Hedge Trimmer and the DUM604Z Grass Shear are interchangeable, where the grass shear and hedge trimmer blades can be installed into both the 10.8v and 18v units. (UH201D blades sold separate). This model also has the added feature of a battery capacity warning - lamp starts blinking red, this indicates battery capacity is low and when the lamp lights up, the tool has stopped due to battery capacity being empty.
This ZX version comes complete with grass and hedge cutting shear attachments, including a grass receiver and a chip receiver. We recommend adding a 831278-2 Duffel Tool Bag or a MAKPAC type 3 carry case with Powertool World Pixel Foam Inlays.

Fantastic Machine, Have had a large Hedge cutter, but unbalenced and heavy. The Makita with extra Hedge cuttung blade is just the job, can still attack large areas but is very adaptable and light.

I should have heeded the comments on this product that people have left on other websites. I chose this item as I have numerous Makita 18 volt tools and therefore have batteries and charger already.I bought this tool mainly to use it for shrub and small hedge trimming, rather than grass edging so as yet I have not tried the edger. The hedge/shrub attachment is totally useless and cannot manage any greenery with even a pinky sized green stem. This is inexplicable as I have used cheap Aldi battery trimmers that are really powerful. As previous reviewers have remarked. changing the cutting blades from edger to trimmer is extremely intricate. My advice is to steer clear of this product.

A very useful tool a bit fiddly to swap the blades over from Shears to hedge trimmer. Once fitted did a very good job of trimming lawn edges. It would be nice to have an extension handle but I have been unable to source one.

So long as you don't try and force it through thick grass, it works a dream. I like the adjustable cutting height for lowering those annoying tufts on the lawn. It really comes into its own when trimming those uneven, unruly areas around shrubs. I already had a battery, having previously bought the hedge trimmer.

This is a good tool, for small areas where using a mower or strimmer is not possible. The clipper does not bog down, but the speed that you can push it along varies depending how thick the grass is. It has no trouble dealing with herbaceous weeds that grow in long grass. Even with a 3 Amp battery it lasts a reasonable time. I have not tried the small hedge trimmer attachment, but I did note that it is a bit fiddly to change between the tools. This seems to be a solid and reliable tool as expected from Makita.

Having recently fitted an electric chicken net fence in my back garden, the grass under it needs to be kept down to avoid shorting. The fence is permanent and the the lawn mower can't get close and a strimmer would wreck the net. A hand trimmer looked to be ideal. It I wanted a cordless model and also one from a reputable manufacturer as I have had bad experiences with 'cheap and cheerful' tools. The Makita was a no brainer as I already own batteries and a charger. The machine it self is well made in Makita blue and black. In use it vibrates in the hand, but not excessively so and was not uncomfortable. I use 3.0Ah batteries, and the unit felt light and balanced in the hand. Makita do 4 and 5 Ah batteries which would last longer but increase the weight, but I have no experience but I like having the option. The Trigger was a spring loaded interlock, rather like most tools, to avoid accidental triggering and it is easy to use one handed. For grass cutting, I was able to use it in one hand whilst lifting my net with the other (taking GREAT care as the tool would do serious damage to my fingers, I suspect). The cut was good on dry grass, cutting height and is adjustable using the grass collector (or removing it altogether for a close shave). Heights are measured far more precisely than I could ever cut with a hand tool, but I like the optimism. The collector picked up most of the cuttings, but needs very frequent tipping out as you go. Taking the collector off wasn't easy - especially as it is plastic and there is the worry that you are about to break it. Still, once learned, it is pretty easy. The shears comes with a short hedge trimmer. This wasn't what I bought it for but was a useful bonus, that said, it is short and the cut is only 'reasonable' - it won't replace a dedicated tool, but for small touch up and little bushes, it would be fine. The Hedge trimmer comes with a chip catcher to make cleaning up easier. This was only moderately successful for me, but not a big deal. I saw several people complain that the changeover between grass and hedge trimming 'heads' is not tool free,. Personally, I have no issue with that- it's not as if this is a drill chuck where you are changing bits a often. The tool' required when changing is a flat screwdriver - it really wasn't a biggie for me. However, whilst I normally have no problem with these things, changing the heads over initially defeated me and I was forced to resort to reading the instructions! Even then, I still found this tricky and on first time and had a part fall out on me, that was smothered in grease. Luckily I wasn't standing over dirt in the garden; less luckily, I was wearing a new shirt. The part is the "crank" - and the swathes of grease is a good thing as this is a high wear part. In fact, Makita say the more grease should be added when you change heads, but none was supplied. The Crank itself is 'loose' as it needs to be flipped over when you change the head. As I say, first time was hard - but subsequently there was no problem. Overall, I have been pleased with my purchase and have no regrets; it's a great bit of kit.

These are really good shears and strong enough to get through the grass on the lawn edge
