Would you like to add any more feedback about your stay? Lovely field, about 2 minutes walk from the hotel, beside the leisure centre which is ideal for dog walking.
We were made very welcome at The Golden Fleece with the dog. The staff were lovely and we were allocated one of the best rooms in the hotel with a four-poster bed! Very comfortable and beautifully maintained overlooking the Market Square. There was a bag of treats, toys and poo bags for the dog too. Sausage treats were made available at breakfast time too!

Hotel was nice and room was comfortable. Offered lots of information about where we could take our dog which was helpful. Food was lovely in the hotel and really accommodating for us to eat with our dog. Friendly staff who made a fuss of the dog and made sure she had treats and sausages etc. Overall a really enjoyable stay and we would recommend this place.

We booked 2 nights at the Golden Fleece specifically to take our dog away for a little break. Sheā€™s 13 and has arthritis, so we needed a ground floor room as she canā€™t climb up a flight of stairs. We arrived early to be told the room wouldnā€™t be ready until 3pm. When we went back we were allocated Room 24. It didnā€™t have a window, only an emergency exit door into the car park with small glass panels in the top half. Around the glass panels was black, with dirt and mould. The room was dark and dingy and painted in a dark dreary green and cream colour with a brown carpet, which did nothing to brighten it up. It was a no smoking room but smelt of smoke due to the smoking point being outside to the right of the room in the car park. The main issue we had though was cleanliness. There was dust everywhere, on the bedhead, dressing table, coffee machine, some of the skirting boards, inside the wardrobe, the heated towel rail, lamps. There was a big long stain on the wall at the bottom of the bed, resulting in plaster / paint peeling off. Coffee/tea stains on the wall next to the kettle and what looked like a water stain on the divan base. Something brown on the bathroom door near the handle, that I donā€™t even want to imagine what it was . I went to reception to explain what weā€™d found. Unfortunately they didnā€™t have another ground floor room available. To cut a long story short, we decided we couldnā€™t stay in that room and packed and came home the very same night. The hotel were most apologetic and said the stain on the wall was due to leak that they hadnā€™t got round to repainting. They had no excuse for the cleanliness issues and offered us a full refund, but is that good enough. Not at all. Why sell a room in that was in need of painting. Why make us wait an hour to check in when obviously the room hadnā€™t just finished being cleaned. We had a completely wasted 120 mile round trip which no one has mentioned. The staff were very nice but I thought the hotel was very tired and needed some TLC.

Main hotel reception rooms & restaurant are classic coaching inn, with a contemporary decor. Good. Unfortunately we were in the attached Mews. The bedroom was very small, little room for the dog bed! We had glorious weather, which highlighted the lack of ventilation- & the small fan only circulated the hot air! Suggest 2 of these rooms be knocked into 1, with better ventilation/air conditioning. The room allocation was the only downer. Dining room food was good- especially the breakfast & roast beef sunday lunch. Cocktails are overpriced, but Theakstons blonde was good. The manager & staff were friendly. Location to town excellent, & lovely footpath walks.

We would definitely stay at The Golden Fleece Hotel Thirsk again. I have included some friendly criticism in this review. The hotel staff were friendly and welcoming. The bar and dining room were very comfortable. Although our dog wasn't allowed in the main dining area we didn't feel as though we were missing out on comfort in fact, the doggie dining area was carpeted. We enjoyed a delicious evening meal on our first evening and an equally delicious breakfast the following morning. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. Our dog seemed to be trying to get through a wall every time we went up the stairs and during the first night of my stay I heard a thud and it definitely wasn't my dog. We found later that the building was haunted. Perhaps my dog could see a way through the wall or was trying to follow someone?! None of this spoilt our visit though. The building is lovely with it's winding corridors and is deceptively large, as I found out when I had to carry mine and my parent's cases up a lot of stairs and along corridors (there are no lifts, I guess because the building will be listed). The Deluxe Twin Room was spacious, airy and overlooked the market square. Despite having the window open at night there was little or no noise from outside. Beds were comfortable. The Classic Plus Double alas, was a little disappointing. It felt dark and small. The room looked out onto a brick wall. If this was the only room I had seen I wouldn't go back to stay. It's worth spending a little more for a nicer view and more space. Both rooms do have everything you may need, including a hair dryer. There was also a goodie bag in the room for our dog, it said that this would include a dog bowl but there wasn't one, luckily we'd taken one. There was also a small tennis ball in bag and I wouldn't advocate using a tennis ball without a rope because they present a choking hazard. I would suggest a tug rope instead. The hotel is ideally situated on the market square and just a couple of minute's walk away is the World of James Herriot which is well worth a visit. Thirsk Museum is opposite WJH but we didn't have time to visit. A little further along the road is a sculpture garden which is lovely when the weather is fine because most of the sculptures are on grass. If you are taking your dog there are some lovely walks and nice parks only 2-5mins walk away.

Would you like to add any more feedback about your stay? We feel that we should have been told about the ground floor rooms not being part of the package or if there was a need to upgrade and then we would have done this when booking.
Welcoming place and great food, disappointing room as asked for ground floor room when booking but none available. Manager said the package did not include ground floor but we had asked for this when booking so feel was misleading.
