I've had this on the car for about a month now and it looks great. I am a little disappointed to discover that it is chromed stainless rather than plain, as this means it isn't maintenance-free like plain SS would be. However, having read the other reviews mentioning damage to the underlying paint, I think I will be taking it off and only using it when needed (basically holiday trips). I will dry-store it between times. It must affect the aerodynamics of the car and impact fuel consumption, so perhaps no bad thing. Fitting it was easy with the instructions provided, although next time I will get myself a glamorous assistant, as you really need three hands to hold the bits in place and fit the bolts together. I took a risk with scratching the paint, and I should have asked for help. (I didn't scratch it, though.) Having done it once I reckon it would be a 10-minute job to take off/replace, so no drama. Delivery was quick and the packaging excellent.

There is no denying the quality of this rack is superb and the fit is great but we toured the UK for 3 months with mixed weather and on returning home and removing the rack I found the paint under the straps which hold the rack to the bootlid had caused the paint to go a milky colour, I tried to polish this out with T Cut and Auto Glym but nothing would remove it. This has cost me a bootlid respray!

I have one of these racks and although well made and better looking than other racks there is a significant amount of rusting. This is due to the grade of stainless used (304) rather than the preferred 316.However it can be kept in check with regular cleaning.Of a far more important point is the lack of spares support. The rubber seals, especially under the hooks are prone to falling out and I've lost two.I've asked MX5 Parts for replacement spares but told I need to buy a new rack!!Even at £10 each I would buy them as they are preformed.Come on MX5 Parts how about getting onto your suppliers to spare support their equipment?!Would be interested in a replyRuss

Bought Sept 12 and very pleased. Relatively easy fit BUT after one year the chrome has lost its lustre and it looks like it will rust very soon. This is very disappointing. Stainless steel????

Great addition, gives the car more versatility! I can get bike frame on it and wheels in the boot (mtb only with tyres deflated). I also use 2 waterproof roll top bags, 60l each to double luggage capacity. Can't comment on marks left behind as I've never taken it off. Boot springs will need a fettle due to the extra weight.

this is a lovely good looking rack but it really isn\'t stainless steel; it is cheap chromed steel. in other words it looks great for 6 months and then rusts horribly. MX5 Parts, even if it is unintentional, you are guilty of mis-selling a low cost chrome rack as a high quality stainless one. but hey, I am on my 2nd one in 18 months and am about to send it off for rechroming simply because it looks good.Editors Note: We have been producing these luggage racks for quite some time now and we can assure you that they are made from 100% 304 Stainless steel, then chromed over the top. We have in the past had them independently tested to ensure that they are stainless. The reason they are chromed is because of the complexity of the item, it is extremely difficult to highly polish the metal itself. If you have had issues with rusting (please note, the problem we suspect you are getting is pitting in the chrome plating) then please contact a member of the sales team as these carry a 5 year warranty and we would always be happy to replace it. It should also be noted that like any highly polished surface, the item should be cleaned on a regular basis to ensure it stays in good condition.

This boot rack is very difficult to fit and the instructions are not very clear. The most annoying thing is that the little plastic bits that fit in the metal hooks around the boot lid are loose and keep falling out when you are trying to fit it on. I have read the other reviews about it marking the boot lid and this would not be a problem if it was easy to take off and on - but it isn't. You need to make sure you put the allen key in the car so that you can take it off when you need to. A much better design would be fast clips of some kind. I would not recommend buying this item.
