Solgar Advanced Acidophilus 100 Vegetable Capsules is a non-dairy probiotic food supplement providing 500 million live microorganisms per capsule, including Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5, a friendly bacterium that is naturally found in the intestines. The capsules are suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
**Key Features**
- **500 million microorganisms per capsule:** Solgar states that each capsule provides 500 million specially cultured microorganisms.
- **Protective matrix:** Solgar states that its polysaccharide matrix technology protects the live bacteria from being destroyed by stomach acid before they reach the gut, and also provides food for the organisms.
- **Refrigeration not needed:** Solgar states that the matrix enhances shelf stability, so the capsules do not need to be refrigerated.
- **Gluten free:** Solgar lists this product as gluten free, and the capsule shell is a vegetable one made from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose.
### What does the NHS say about probiotic supplements?
The NHS describes probiotics as live bacteria and yeasts, usually added to yoghurts or taken as food supplements. It says there is some evidence they may help in some cases, such as easing some symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, but little evidence to support many of the health claims made about them.
Because probiotics are generally classed as food rather than medicine, the NHS notes that it cannot always be sure a product contains the bacteria stated on the label, enough of them to have an effect, or that they survive long enough to reach the gut. Different types of probiotic may also have different effects.
### Can people with a weakened immune system take Solgar Advanced Acidophilus?
The NHS advises anyone with an existing health condition or a weakened immune system to talk to a doctor before taking any probiotic supplement.
### What pack sizes does Solgar Advanced Acidophilus come in?
Solgar has sold this formulation as 50 and 100 vegetable capsule packs. This page covers the pack of 100 vegetable capsules; the packs differ only in the number of capsules.
