Oval Hole Mandolins vs F Hole Mandolins
Aesthetics and construction aside, oval hole mandolins (A Style) will usually have a warmer, more woody tone and offer greater projection, sustain and resonance - particularly in the lower register.
F-hole mandolins will typically offer a brighter tone, with more volume and a stronger attack. Sometimes, they can offer a slightly more percussive sound, depending on the instrument. The higher the quality of the craftsmanship however, the fewer the differences that exist between the two styles. Traditionally, oval hole mandolins are more commonly used for traditional Irish music and folk music, while F-hole mandolins are played in bluegrass, country, and folk rock. This is not a hard and fast rule however. You can play any style of music on whichever style of mandolin you prefer.

After an initial poor review of this mandolin, the company has been very helpful in rectifying the issues and I now have a mandolin that sounds good for the price. I can now finally get to play it as intended. Thanks to Conor and the team for solving my problems

Marvelous sound at this price point. Action is set a little high perhaps, but that may be due primarily to my beginner status. Either way, love to play this instrument and the craftsmanship, delivery, and ease of purchase make McNeela a place I will often return to in order to purchase instruments.

Beautiful instrument. Exactly what I was looking for. The strings were a little heavy for me (personally) and I'm a newer mando player, but this was an easy fix and something you would need to do for any instrument you order that isn't ready for your "personal" playstyle, technique, strength or dexterity. So I bought lighter strings. Easy enough. Love the instrument.

I reviewed this after about a week of playing, and my strings broke. I had a complaint of buzzing strings too, but as soon as I replaced my strings, that issue was fixed. I am re-evaluating my review because I have no complaints since I restringed my instrument, and have been incredibly happy with the sound and ease of learning. Along with that, I also received new strings from this company after posting my initial review, which was highly unexpected for me, as I was completely unaware of it. I had the assumption that it was an instrument that I was learning on, and im going to need new strings eventually anyway, so no big deal. With the customer service, the quality I have received for this product, and how happy I am with it, it deserves a full 5 stars!

After practicing for about a week, I have only two complaints: one of my strings broke on the sixth practice session, and some buzzing on two strings that I cannot seem to fix. the buzzing happens even when played open. The string that broke was one of the buzzing ones, so I intend to restring the instrument entirely. I am a beginner, so I am inexperienced with many of the finer details, but I do love the look and sound of the instrument so far.

Nice mandolin. Bad luck, one string broke after a few days.
