Oval Hole Mandolins vs F Hole Mandolins
Aesthetics and construction aside, oval hole mandolins (A Style) will usually have a warmer, more woody tone and offer greater projection, sustain and resonance - particularly in the lower register.
F-hole mandolins will typically offer a brighter tone, with more volume and a stronger attack. Sometimes, they can offer a slightly more percussive sound, depending on the instrument. The higher the quality of the craftsmanship however, the fewer the differences that exist between the two styles. Traditionally, oval hole mandolins are more commonly used for traditional Irish music and folk music, while F-hole mandolins are played in bluegrass, country, and folk rock. This is not a hard and fast rule however. You can play any style of music on whichever style of mandolin you prefer.

“I'm a total beginner but I love my new mandolin. I bought the low budget starter A-body model and it is just fine for learning. Tips: it comes with a case so don't order an extra one! The only problem is that they don't sell straps so I bought one at a local Guitar Center store.”

“Good customer service If this review was about customer service then it would rate 5 stars. However, it is also about the instrument I bought from them. It arrived with a number of quality control defects, some of which I could have tolerated, but altogether meant it had to go back. For this I have been dealing with Aaron, who has efficiently helped me resolve these issues. It is a pity, because the instrument looked good, and mostly sounded good on the strings not affected by fret buzz. With a bit more care it could be a nice instrument.”

“A beautiful instrument I am the definition of an absolute beginner so I have nothing to compare this to - however to me it’s a marvelous Mandolin. The tone is clean and clear, action is manageable and it’s lovely to play. I’m enjoying every moment of my time learning this beautiful instrument.”
