To be fair, I wasn't expecting a Rolls Royce at this price, and overall I think this concertina is excellent value for money. I was looking for a C/G anglo to be able to join in with other players. However, as someone with over 30 years’ experience, there are a couple of areas that I quibble at. At this time, the instrument does need time to be played in, but the reeds don’t seem to give a huge amount of volume. In a month or two, I’ll set the reeds a little better as some of them are a bit reluctant to speak as yet. My other minor disappointment is that the metal ends are a bit like cheese graters on my fingers! I have had this problem with a much more expensive instrument and dealt with it with needle files – this instrument has a mesh under the ends. I can’t get the needle files through, so I have to use a rotary tool to grind the edges. This is going to be a long job! Having stated that, it’s a third of the price of my second choice concertina and I certainly don’t think I’ve wasted my money.

To start with, I am a senior with small, slightly arthritic hands who happens to live in an apartment building. Learning to play a concertina has long been on my bucket list, but I was hesitant due to my concerns about the sound disturbing my neighbours. After some investigation I determined that the McNeela Swan might be my best choice. I placed my order and, with no small amount of trepidation, awaited the arrival of the Swan. I had looked at other affordable concertinas available in my city, but found them to be too heavy, bulky and difficult to manage, and often with a disappointingly loud, flat sound. When my McNeela arrived I nervously unpacked the box and was immediately impressed by the beautiful, durable case. I carefully removed the concertina and played a few tentative notes. I was instantly struck by not only how easy it was to play overall, but by how easy it was to play softly! In addition, the sound quality is divine; it was vibrant, resonant, absolutely beautiful. As with my other instruments, out of consideration to my neighbours, I do not play it late at night. Furthermore, when contacting McNeela with a few questions, I found them to be quick in their response; and very kind and refreshingly courteous (a rarity today). In summary, I am so very happy I own a McNeela Swan concertina!

Good day for you all. I am very happy with my new Swan. What a difference with my old cheap concertina. She plays so well, the reach is fantastic and the sound is even very good. I have a question. How do a maintain the leather bellows, with wax or leather oil???? Perhaps you can give me a good advice. And the lessons of Jack talty are very good, compliments for you all. Kind regards Ronald Slegh

Hi Ronald, we're delighted to hear you're enjoying your new Swan concertina so much! Regarding the bellows, there's no need for oil or wax, just keep them clean and maintain them by playing as often as possible. Best of luck with it all.
