The Seery Delrin® Flute is suitable for all weather conditions, making it the perfect flute to play anywhere in the world. And even better, this flute has virtually no maintenance costs - it's easy to see why this is Dessie’s most popular flute model. It really provides the player with peace of mind as the flute has been made using such great materials; there's no need to worry about oiling the instrument or getting those dreaded cracks in the barrel. When playing this flute you will produce a rich tone every time, exactly what every player strives for.
With professionals such as Tom Doorley of Danú and Eamonn de Barra of Slide having recorded on a Seery Delrin® flute, there's no doubting this fantastic flute's ability.
Delrin® acetal resin bridges the gap between metals and ordinary plastics with a unique combination of creep resistance, strength, stiffness, hardness, dimensional stability, toughness, fatigue resistance, solvent and fuel resistance, abrasion resistance, low wear and low friction. Why use an Acetal Homopolymer? Homopolymers perform significantly better than Copolymers in their toughness at extreme temperatures (2x), fatigue endurance (100x), and elongation at yield (2x). Copolymers cannot reach the mechanical properties that Homopolymers offer for demanding applications.

All my experiences with the Des Seery Flute are exactly as advertised. It is more difficult to play then a classical flute but I see nothing I can't handle. I've only had it for a short time, can hit all the notes, and keep improving every day. I love the clean keyless look and never having to worry about humidity issues. I'm really glad I listened to my inspiration to get this and make it a part of my life. Thank you.

I had the pleasure of stopping by the McNeela workshop to try a couple of flutes on a recent trip to Dublin. I wish I would have had more time to spend in the shop, but our trip was reduced by a day due to flight cancellations caused by weather and so our scheduled free time was reduced. I do hope to return sometime and spend more time in the shop trying other flutes and instruments. In particular, I focused on the Seery keyless Delrin flute and the Arie De Keyzer keyless wooden flute (tried both blackwood and mopane). All were great flutes. I have been playing classical flute for about 9 years (starting music late in life), and baroque flute for about 2 years. I decided to add Irish flute to the mix, as: (1) I love the music, and (2) it will help reinforce the baroque flute (which share the fingerings). I own a pvc Tipple flute, which has a slightly offset “d” hole, so it took me a bit to get used to the straight hole positions. After settling in I tried each flute with a tuner, playing some scales (d major, g major), overtones off of low “d” and low “e,” and notes that might be considered “accidentals” for a keyless flute (c-natural, b-flat, and g-sharp). Using baroque fingerings I found all three flutes to be essentially in tune (and assumed any slight discrepancy was due to my not being quite comfortable with the flutes). I chose the Seery not because I felt it was necessarily better (my wife who was with me and listening couldn’t really tell any difference in the flutes – and she is a vocalist who has a reasonably good ear) but because: (1) I liked the idea of not worrying about the wood cracking (I have two wooden flutes, a classical Yamaha and a Wenner Baroque and have had no problems, but I am very careful and always worry a bit about them), (2) it felt slightly easier to play than the De Keyzer flutes for the brief time I spent with them, and (3) it was a bit less expensive. I have now played the flute for two weeks and am very happy with my purchase, and would highly recommend this flute be added to anyone’s list for trial. I consider this a workhorse flute that will facilitate my learning Irish Traditional music, and will work for me in casual session settings. When I get to the point of considering keys I will certainly come back to McNeela and seriously consider a keyed De Keyzer. I want to especially thank Vivien Pilson who took time with me while Paraic was away for the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. Go raibh maith agat!

The flute I bought from these fine folks was for my son so I can’t vouch for the quality per say. I will tell you that he’s yet to complain and it sounds great when he’s practicing with it. What really compels me to write this review (as I seldom take the time to write them; good or bad), is the unusual and unexpected lengths McNeela went to accommodate an extenuating circumstance with our order. They took this as an opportunity to demonstrate how much they valued us as customers. I was really impressed and can only imagine what a wonderful world it would be if more businesses had this attitude. I sincerely can’t say enough good things about McNeela and it should go without saying we are customers for life!

I live in Vermont, USA, and considered buying either the McNeela African Blackwood flute or the Seery Delrin flute. I ended up ordering the African Blackwood flute based on the sound in several YouTube videos (as I was unable to try them out in person); I also liked the idea of a more traditional wood instrument. However, the Blackwood flute developed a crack after my first extended session playing it, and I traded it in for the Des Seery flute. Now, having played both models, I would say that I prefer the Seery Delrin flute. The tone is excellent and the playability seems a bit better than the African Blackwood flute. I am certainly not bothered by the Delrin synthetic material in any way. The tone is beautiful, it feels great, and it is nice to know that this flute is virtually indestructible. When I move up to a higher priced model, this will be a great backup/outdoor flute, or a flute to pass on to relatives. This would certainly be my recommendation for this price range, particularly to anyone living in a climate with dry winters. I also can attest to the excellent customer service offered by McNeela to its overseas customers, and their guarantee of their instruments.
