The Seery Delrin® Flute is suitable for all weather conditions, making it the perfect flute to play anywhere in the world. And even better, this flute has virtually no maintenance costs - it's easy to see why this is Dessie’s most popular flute model. It really provides the player with peace of mind as the flute has been made using such great materials; there's no need to worry about oiling the instrument or getting those dreaded cracks in the barrel. When playing this flute you will produce a rich tone every time, exactly what every player strives for.
With professionals such as Tom Doorley of Danú and Eamonn de Barra of Slide having recorded on a Seery Delrin® flute, there's no doubting this fantastic flute's ability.
Delrin® acetal resin bridges the gap between metals and ordinary plastics with a unique combination of creep resistance, strength, stiffness, hardness, dimensional stability, toughness, fatigue resistance, solvent and fuel resistance, abrasion resistance, low wear and low friction. Why use an Acetal Homopolymer? Homopolymers perform significantly better than Copolymers in their toughness at extreme temperatures (2x), fatigue endurance (100x), and elongation at yield (2x). Copolymers cannot reach the mechanical properties that Homopolymers offer for demanding applications.

This version is a Pratten type with larger finger holes. It also has a smaller elliptical aperture "for easy fill" (Desi formerly made another Rudall version with smaller holes which was more a student version). This is an excellent, beautifully finished and precise flute. The intonation is spot on and the tone is very sweet. and the Acetal (Delrin) material is polished and humidity and temperature stable. An Excellent product and value!

What was I thinking? I tackled the GHB about 30 years ago and have enjoyed them ever since, but I was looking for something a wee bit more subdued to play indoors and decided the Irish flute was it. I originally was going with the African Blackwood since my pipe chanter is blackwood and such a rich sound compared to my Delrin pipe chanter. To be completely honest I can hardly tell the difference anymore. After several emails with the McNeela's sales staff it was decided the Des Seery Delrin flute was the way to go since it was a better fit for my retired life style. My pipe changer, practice chanter and parlor pipes are Delrin and have been with me for many trouble free years so I'm familiar with Delrin instruments and they are worry free when on the road. I expect the same worry free performance from this flute. So how am I getting along with this new challenge? It's been a struggle but the video lesson was included with the purchase and that has made a big difference and well done by the way. I'm starting to get the hang of it and boy it has been a challenge for the old gray matter but I'm sticking with it. One of these days it'll start to come together and I'll actually make some music with it. It's well made, feels great in the hand and whether I'm practicing at an RV campsite, my front porch, garage, shed or den I don't worry about it falling off table, heat, cold or humidity it's always ready to go.

A fantastic little instrument from McNeela's flute lineup! I'm a classically trained professional oboist who has been working to get back into Irish trad, and this flute is definitely the right one for an intermediate Irish trad flutist or else a professional woodwind player looking to pick up the Irish flute as an auxiliary instrument. I have tiny hands and so my placement must be exact given the size and spread of the tone holes, but I certainly don't mind it at all! I strongly prefer instruments that both play well and do a good job of training my hands to be precise in their movements, especially if it's one I'm learning/relearning. High levels of precision being required from the outset might feel daunting to a true beginner, as it will take longer to sound good on a good instrument with that tendency. But that same requirement ensures that good habits are firmly instilled from day one, which is why I prefer such an instrument. The Seery flute has a lovely warm but vibrant (not fuzzy!) tone, and it can do whatever is asked of it; whether that be producing a soft, sweet and smoothly connected lyrical passage or decisively cutting through with a crisp bite. It is relatively easily do both with a little intentional practice, as well as is everything in between, throughout the range. The pitch centers are perfect, the fundamental octave (which sets up the baseline intonation of every note/every cross-fingered note above the first octave) is rich and properly voiced, and once you find where the head joint best works for you the tone production and response are both excellent for the price range. Originally I was going to keep this for a year or so then trade up, but I like this flute enough that I intend on keeping it for my outdoor gigs whenever I finally get around to ordering a keyed wooden flute. If you're serious about learning traditional flute and you want a flute that is easy in all the right ways and will keep you and your technique honest and clean, this might be your flute. Also, this is not the first instrument I've purchased from McNeela, and every time I've interacted with the good people at the shop my experiences have been exceptionally positive. This is a wonderful shop with knowledgeable folks who are ready and waiting to offer their expertise and assistance. They even have made returns and trial periods exceptionally smooth and easy the one time I've needed to return a product. Cannot recommend them enough!

Hi Sarah, thank you for your detailed review of the wonderful Des Seery flute. This will really help buyers make their decision. Seery flutes have been played by a lot of the greats and are much loved. Thank you also for your kind words about your customer experience with us. It's great to get that feedback.

Quiet happy. Straight the sound came, the tone is nice and I already fill the vibrations in my fingers even if the E hole is a bit wide for now. With a beat of practice I will get the sound that I looking for, at the moment. I think it is a good intermediate (a compromise) before getting a real top one that I cannot afford right now.
