“I was skeptical, not going to lie.
It looks a bit like a daytime shopping network special and it isn't cheap.
I ruptured my achilles tendon 2 weeks ago, I'm in a boot that completely immobilizes my foot and ankle. It's a nightmare getting anything done independently on crutches. I saw this and decided to go for it after seeing reviews and social media posts.
I am so glad I did.
For the first time in two weeks I was able to go to my kitchen, make food and then carry it back to the living room. I'm able to get things done, load the washing machine, cook, clean dishes all things that you don't realize how much you value until you lose your independence.
Is it as smooth as using your leg? No. It's a bit clunky, it's got a decent enough weight to it that makes walking require a bit more effort.
Shipping was quick and comms from company were good. My only negative about the experience is that I would prefer a printed manual/guide, that I could skim through at my own speed; that said the videos are very thorough and I can appreciate their value to some people.
I was up and hobbling within 15 minutes of taking it out of the box. Doesn't take much to adjust to using it. There was a bit of a learning curve to getting it strapped on properly and adjusted for comfort, especially if you are like me and are stuck in baggy shorts since the fabric tends to bunch up under the straps then shifts when you load it up. Take your time, take your first steps with support for balance, I used a single crutch for the first few minutes until I got used to it.
I don't regret my purchase and would recommend this to anyone who is going to be spending significant time in crutches and non weight bearing.”
“Totally liberating bit of kit. I'm 60 but pretty fit and strong (dong half ironmans and ultra marathons until this injury) but it did take a week or so to gain confidence using it particularly outside where there is no support going up/down steps etc. As others have said, persevere with it though as once you do get used to it, it's fantastic, enabling you to get around without crutches leaving your hands free - a massive boon considering I'm currently in the process of moving house! Would definitely recomment it.”
“Well made, sturdy with good support via videos to assemble and use.
It has enabled me to move confidently and surely inside and out. Brilliant!
My one issue while in the initial caste was the caste rubbing on my shin, even when using the supplied foam pad to lift my knee. I'm now in a boot which is much better as it has a padded sleeve protecting my shin.”
“Speedy delivery, neatly packaged, easy to assemble (thanks to the excellent videos). Took my first teetering steps within half hour of delivery. Within a short while I could manage from one end of the house to the other. Following day I tried the stairs (my stairs are peculiar, straight on or branch to the right with a diagonal step). Managed to get up and down safely but will need a bit more practice before going upstairs to sleep.
Yesterday went out to the car and practiced getting in and out (automatic car so only need the right leg - in my case it is the good one).
This morning I went for a supermarket shop, unassisted, without issue.
It has certainly transformed how I see my six weeks in plaster.
Highly recommended.”
“I am a right leg below knee amputee and have not walked for 4 months while waiting for my prosthetic measurements and fitting. I discovered the I-walk from various google searches. Initially I was worried that the I-walk might not be for me so contacted UK Knee Crutches, Steve got back to me almost immediately (even on a bank holiday weekend) and put me at ease with the return process just in case the I-walk was not suitable. I ordered and it arrived the next day, as I placed the order Steve emailed me with some instructions and video links, these were very helpful and I was able to build the I-walk in less than 30 minutes.
Next the walking, it was difficult to use the first time however I had not walked for 4 months. I practiced for the next 2-3 days and now I’m able to use it quite well. I can now walk around the house hands free which has been amazing and gives me back some independence. I would highly recommend for below knee amputees looking to get some independence back.”
