Freeview Play Recorder FVP-4000T 500GB Cappuccino (Refurbished) Reviews

4.3 Rating 73 Reviews
Easy to set up and easy to use once I got used to the different functions from my old Humax. I like the inbuilt wireless connection which works every time I use the machine and the iPlayer, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 On Demand Apps which was the main reason for getting this model. I would have given it five stars but the slight delay when going through the different functions on the handset is slightly annoying, which wasn't present in my old machine.

Positives: My refurbished recorder arrived 3 days after ordering, complete with all accessories and in as-new condition. It tuned-in the complete set of Freeview channels (inc. HD) automatically and reception of all those is reliable. I like that programmes to be recorded can be chosen from the EPG with the dedicated “Record” button. All the (streaming) Catch-up TV services play (over the built-in wi-fi) without buffering even on my slow 5 Mbps broadband connection. Negatives: In order to use the (streaming) Catch-up TV Services, it is necessary to first register with each of those online using a PC - something I hadn’t realised when purchasing. In the EPG, aprogramme’s synopsis isn’t displayed together with the schedule grid - you have to press OK to view a synopsis separately. The remote control lets the recorder down badly; the most important and most used keys - the cursor and OK keys - are unresponsive and must be pressed hard to make electrical contact. Quite often, they then register a double-click which can have undesired inconvenient effects. I wouldn’t be surprised if the remote control’s failure will be the cause of the recorder becoming unusable ultimately - maybe a third-party replacement remote would “save the day”. Finally, I found a way of successfully getting the recorder to register with the ITV Hub. First, on a PC browser go to the ITV Hub and log-in to your account. Then, in the Humax recorder’s EPG, choose a past ITV programme to play via Catch-up TV (they are indicated by a Play symbol in a circle). You’ll then be offered a numeric code which you enter into your PC at www.itv.com/hub/pair.

This model is not as easy to use as previous models and there is no function to fast forward the adverts by skipping, other than fast forwarding the recording. You have to go through additional functions to skip days when trying to record in advance rather than simply hitting the forward key, watching deleting and managing your recordings are all more complicated and time consuming. Very disappointed, much prefer the earlier model!
