“To be honest, I've been using mostly DH Labs Silver Sonics BL-1's in my system. It was THE 'go to' giant killer cable when I got it, 15 years ago. Silver clad 4 nines pure copper wire; don't know the insulation or exact configuration. I bought buttloads of it, because it was so clean and neutral sounding. Conventional wisdom has it that silver clad copper sounds thin and bright, but I've never heard that with these cables. Like I said, clean and neutral.
But when an RCA on the end of a 15 ft pair started having intermittent contact with ground, causing a loud ground loop hum in my right monobloc, I started looking closer at the quality of the RCA's. Not near as good as the ones on my Cardas Twin Links, or on these cables. I do think that the quality of the RCA's are an often overlooked factor in the sound of a cable, and these looked the business. My hunch was that the gold plated tellurium copper would sound better than the indifferent RCA's on my BL-1's.
So I ordered a single 15 ft. run, so I could compare with the Silver Sonic BL-1 on my left monobloc. Nicely made cable! The RCA locked onto the substantial RCA on the back of my Odyssey Extremed Kismet monobloc with a very satisfying "THOK!"....no dodgy connections, here! I ran it in for some, and started listening.
Wish I could tell you it was a sonic revelation compared to the BL-1, but it wasn't. They sounded identically clean and neutral,certainly none worse. Once it's good, then it's good. The Silver Sonics have now doubled in price in the 15 years since I bought them, as have everything else. Seeing as how you'll pay about the same for a pair of those as a pair of these, you might as well go with these, as the build quality is way better, especially the RCA's.
But stay tuned...I'm going to buy a 1.5 meter single run of the the less expensive Premier, and tee it into my left monobloc. I'm betting the sonics are about the same. I know you're supposed to run the same length cable to both monoblocs, but my left one sits right next to my rack, and I found long ago that there are no sonic differences, configured thusly. The Premiers have the good Cardas copper on the signal wire, and two layers of shielding, which should be more than adequate. I will let you know what I find.”
“A little bit polite and warm, just like Cardas cables. Lacks some vivid excitement. Should be a perfect match for some thinner or forward sounding equipment.”
“What brought me to these cables was the Cardas copper and the triple shielding. I needed a long run to make it convenient switching between my three tuners. My amp doesn't have enough inputs for all three. Compared to my Cardas Neutral Reference they might be a little brighter, compared to a pair of custom cables I have not quite as bright. A niece weighty conveyance of the source. Expect the normal break-in time. I'm still only about halfway home...”
