“Good service - happy with the turnaround and the result - thank you. In my case, things to think about:- 1) I paid £25 extra for TrueCrypt - which I now understand is free ware - I note the site is closed down with a note that it is not secure - For whatever reason I did not get the password and had to phone up 2) I would have like a short report on what was wrong with the disk I sent - it was still under warranty and would have liked to know if I could make a claim”

Hello Andrew and thank you for your comments. I would like to make the following points in answer to your observations. 1) Truecrypt We offer encryption as an option and do not make the £25 charge for 'Truecrypt' directly but we do make the charge for the extra time taken to encrypt the data, on average it takes about 90 minutes to prepare a drive for encryption alone. 1a) Truecrypt Security. We have looked at this in some depth and looked at other encryption software as a replacement, however upon reading the Audit report the security issues found in Truecrypt were mainly minor with two medium security issues. Most of the faults were with programming anomalies such as variable types and declarations. There were no major issues found and most importantly there were no 'back doors' to the data found. So our conclusion was that it is better to use software that has known minor issues that are documented than software that has not been audited and is unknown if there are any issues of any type or back doors. There is some interesting information the Truecrypt Saga on Steve Gibson's Security website here : https://www.grc.com/misc/truecrypt/truecrypt.htm 2) Reporting Because we offer a free diagnosis service, we do not provide a report as to the problem with the drive, however if required we can provide one. We make no charge. In terms of warranty, it is always best to check the manufacturers data recovery policy. Most do not require a report, but do require a statement that the work has been carried out by a data recovery company and the conditions the work was carried out in, This statement is within the letter sent when returning your data.
