“Written by A aged 9… The chin strap was slightly uncomfortable on first use but they were able to replace this immediately. I wear this for rugby at my school and feel safe with this on. I’ve tackled and been in scrums and it is very solid and secure.”

“My boys loved their Hedkayse head guards initially, the only issue, a fairly major one, is that the Velcro chin strap is quite weak and regularly comes off during games/training. I’ve ensured the Velcro is clean but it just doesn’t stick very well and we’ve nearly lost the strap completely on more than one occasion. Quite embarrassing for a £100 product and I certainly couldn’t recommend it over the competition. A fixed chin strap with higher cohesive property is essential. EDIT: Hedkayse have very quickly offered an improved strap with better Velcro, yet to receive it but only received the notification today. Can’t fault the customer service though. Will update when the new strap has been tried out.”

“The team at Headkayse cannot of been more helpful, I contacted them to discuss how the headguard design functions and to understand optimum fitting, excellent advice and feedback. Great to know that my son has what we perceive to be the best product in the market for him to minimise any head injuries.”

“Its ok if you are male. the style today is for woman / girls to have long hair and it just doesn't work as well as other head caps”

Hi Stephen, thank you for your review. The R5 was designed as a unisex product and the feedback we have received is that it works well for the vast majority of players. We have a number of female players from elite to grass roots happily using the R5, but we do acknowledge that it is not ideal if you have very long or large amounts of hair. As you mentioned in your review, we are working on a version specifically designed for large hair and we'd be delighted to keep you informed on our progress.

“Looks slightly different initially, due to the stitching being lengthways and not as a circular top design, but it is lightweight and when it warms up and after a few wearings, my sons do not notice the difference. Lots of positive comments from other players.”

“Bought for my sone after reading an article on how it actually gives some protection where other scrum caps do not. It fits my son nicely slightly strange shape but he seems to be happy with it.”

“My son, aged 12, told me he needed a scrum cap now he was a forward in a scrum as his head was getting squashed and the coaches recommended one. Having read about Headkayse in The Guardian newspaper last year I find the article again and re-read it. Then read all the information on the Headkayse website and found an online chat discussion about it too. While I am sure that it cannot prevent concussion fully as that is a whiplash action, I do very much believe it can limit the damage and impact of head injuries. What's more, I'm absolutely certain it cannot do any harm and that it will protect my son's head and brain better than an ordinary scrum cap. I've also talked to him about the age old rugby warning that just wearing a hat doesn't make you invincible and you still need to tackle and fall safely when tackled. He understands this well. I therefore have recommended these headguards to other parents at my son's rugby club and sent them the research and told them to make up their own minds with all the caveats above and they have reached the same conclusion as me and bought Headkayse head wear. It would be good to see all players wearing these and I hope the research can continue to help them be able to prove the benefits.”

“So far it seems a great product as my son has said the head gear is comfortable, dissipates heat and that he actually felt more protected in contact, relative to previous head guards. However, his personalised initials and the hedkayse branding, are peeling off, which is disappointing in light of the price point of the product and the fact that he’s only used the head gear a handful of times.”

“While it is without doubt a great safety ‘aspect’ for kids playing the game - the look and overall aesthetic is a little ‘clunky’ - it can also make the wearers head very hot I am told!”

Thank you so much for the review, at first we read this as 'chunky' rather than 'clunky' and wondered if you were referring to the HK staff modelling the R5! We appreciate the look is different to traditional scrum caps, because of course, the R5 is different. We hope that in time we all become more familiar with the different aesthetic as the numbers we see increase. We'd love to hear more about the heat dissipation as the vast majority of users tell us the ventilation is excellent. Many thanks, HK team
