Firstly I’m not a big fan of chess, life’s too short IMHO to spend days, weeks , years even, trying to get good at it, but this game intrigued me after watching a YouTube video of it, so I bit the bullet and I’m glad I did,, this is now a staple in our house. It’s cerebral enough to satisfy the chess crowd (probably!) but casual enough for non chess types like me, I just wish they made a travel version!,

I bought this game for my son for his birthday. He (and I) absolutely love it. The game is simple to learn, but has lots of variety between games. Also it looks beautiful. Would highly recommend. I'm going to buy some expansions soon.

This game solves a problem many chess friends have - when there's a skill level difference that just makes every game too unbalanced, and the better player has to remove a knight, or a rook, to make things even. Not such an elegant solution... Onitama does just that, allows the same two friends to play something not too different from the world of chess, but evened-out by the element of luck in it. Which also means it can be played faster, later at night, casually. Very portable, can take it on a picnic in the park. It can also be used, I imagine, as an introduction to chess-like thinking. A must-have!

A beautiful game, very easy to learn and great fun to play. As mentioned by others, very chess-like, but far simpler and you can only really think a couple of moves ahead at a time. However, it still has enough depth to keep it interesting.
