Gaviscon is an antacid which works by neutralising stomach acid for short-term relief however it does not reduce the amount of stomach acid produced by the stomach.
Omeprazole would therefore normally be a better choice for longer term treatment as it is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach cells, achieving a longer lasting effect than Gaviscon.
