“After a 3 day course of the above my cystitis symptoms seemed to disappear. Two days later I was in great discomfort . I had to see a GP who said the infection was still there and the course of Nitrofurantoin was too short - it should have been for 7 days. He prescribed 5 days of Ciprofloxacin and the infection cleared .”
Hi Shelagh,
I am sorry to hear that you have not found this to be an effective treatment for you on this occasion.
We follow evidence-based clinical guidelines including NICE, NHS and BMS to ensure we prescribe safely and effectively and it appears that your symptoms did quickly improve.
Based on the information provided within your consultation the course of treatment prescribed appropriately followed the evidence-based approach.
To initiate someone on a longer course would be against current medical evidence and guidelines.
Improvements are usually seen within 24 hours of taking Nitrofurantoin, and symptoms are usually completely resolved after 3 days.
If symptoms are not improving or are worsening following at least 3 days of treatment, you should consult your doctor or return to us to explore alternative options.
Good medical practice is to follow the guidelines and review the symptoms presented should they not improve. This may be a sign of a different illness or require a different course of treatment.
Our support team have contacted you directly to provide you with some further reassurance.
