I have been brewing for over 40 years and this is one of the best kit beers I have come across. An excellent example of Belgian Saison.

I've made a kit of the same name from another company and liked it very much, so thought it would be interesting to compare the Beerworks version. Possibly this is a new addition to the Beerworks range as there's no mention of a saison in the all-purpose instruction leaflet, and I had to confirm with Love Brewing that this kit should be fermented at a much higher temperature than an ale as saisons generally require; somewhere around 30C is usual, rather than 20C for most ale yeasts. My SG readings were 1.056 (corrected for 20C) as the starting gravity, and 1.006 as the final gravity, making the result around 6.5% as expected. The yeast included is Mangrove Jack M29 which has a reputation for very energetic fermentation, so I started off with a blowout tube into a bucket of Starsan to avoid blowing out the airlock. Surprisingly, although fermentation started in under 12 hours, it was quite a gentle start, so swapped back to an airlock after a couple of days. Since the all-purpose kit instructions don't specifically cover the Saison kit there was a bit of guesswork deciding when to add the hops (pellets rather than whole hops in this kit). I added after 6 days when the fermentation had slowed down noticeably, but with hindsight it could have been a few days later as it took another 8 days to get down to the target gravity. After a week in the warmth of the house, then 2 weeks clearing in the garage, this is a very drinkable beer, and one I'll probably make again at some point. However it's really a dead-ringer for a true Belgian beer such as Chimay, having a full body and significant sourness rather than a light US hoppiness that I would expect from a beer with new world in the name (and which the other NWS kit had). Whether that's down to the choice of malt extract that Love Brewing have made or some other factor I couldn't say. Unlikely to be the extra hopping time as that usually just results in a hoppier beer.

This is a very easy beer to make, it's testament to the argument that the English aint number one beer makers anymore, this ale deserves a glass of its own, I used a crystal tulip, the flavour hides the 6%ABV kick, slightly darker than a IPA or Pale ale, but don't judge til you had half a pint, this is the nuts. Cheers Rick
