Voted "Best on Test" by Practical Boat Owner, August 2015 Sailing alone or short-handed? Use the patented TillerClutchX to "lash the helm" with the simple click of a lever. The TillerClutchX is a modified version of the standard TillerClutch (see Code: 860999) and is specifically intended for larger boats with heavier steering loads. It's conveniently mounted under the tiller with the lever right in your steering hand. Click it on or off for instant steering adjustments. The TillerClutchX is a specialised rope clutch, not a simple friction brake. There are no knobs to turn, friction to fight, plastic to break, ropes to tie, or bungee cords to adjust. The TillerClutchX gives you a firm hand on the tiller, whenever you need it. Features: Special grooved base fits round or square tiller handles Simple mounting - requires only two screws centred along tiller shaft Compact, solid metal construction withstands the abuse of hard sailing Major components made of solid aluminium alloy, hard-coat anodised and sealed Internal parts made of passivated stainless steel Thoroughly rounded edges for comfort and safety Does not use or interfere with the mounting points of a tiller pilot and remains in place when a tiller pilot is used Unique toggling rope clutch system balanced to maximise holding power with minimal user effort. No need for adjustment screw-knob Rope clutch mechanism calibrated to be overpowered in emergencies and to relieve excessive rudder stress in heavy conditions Size: Width 28mm, Depth 25mm, Body Length 79mm, Lever Length 57mm Suitable for heavier keelboats and cruisers from approx 27ft / 8.25m There is also a TillerClutch Standard model which is suitable for trailer sailors, day sailors and small cruisers up to approx 27ft / 8.25m (see Code: 860999). TillerClutchX Kit Includes: TillerClutchX, 4.9m control line, mounting screws, instructions & limited lifetime warranty

This device is very well made and easy to fit. It is easy and use with a positive action. The advantage over diy methods of lashing the tiller is that it provides instant and easy locking of the line in any position. As with lashing the tiller it's utiliy is dependent on how well balanced a boat is. On my 1980's bilge keeler it is at it's most useful when on the wind in light to moderate winds. I also use it when tacking single-handed. I would recommend you use a diy method of lashing the tiller first to see how your boat responds before deciding to buy one of these.

Solid build quality of the device. Easy to install although screw heads provided are easily stripped so probably better to source some better quailty.

Great quality product and so simple yet effective- allows you to sail solo and go forward to hoist main etc, a bit more exact than just lashing the tiller - you can go down below to make a brew etc and maintain a steady course.
