We’ve decided to decode a few tricky terms, so you feel comfortable whilst you shop. Surface-Mounted Diodes (SMD) are a particular type of LED that can be placed directly onto the surface of a circuit board. They can emit light with a very wide beam angle, produce high quality light and also create more colours. Colour Temperature is the perceived warmth of the illumination – the lower the rating, the warmer the light. Measured in Kelvin (K), this is a scale of whether the light has a yellow or blue undertone. The two main differentiations are Cool White (6000K) and Warm White (3000K). Cool White has an icier and sharper look of a true white whereas, Warm White is much softer and looks yellow. Beam Angles are the angle at which light is emitted from a fitting. Many fittings are named after their beam angle like Spotlights, which illuminate a single spot, and Floodlights, which will flood an entire space with light.
