There’s no compromise for safety anywhere – including our Fixed Polished Chrome Fire Rated MR16 Downlight. The diecast construction ensures a solid build that will last, along with an attractive looking polished chrome finish.
Manufactured by industry leaders Mirrorstone Lighting, this LED downlight only requires a 65mm cutting hole for use too.
Please be aware that with this downlight, the bulbs are sold separately, though all of our MR16 spotlights are compatible. You will also need an LED driver to use MR16 fittings, as existing transformers may not work, and could shorten the lifespan of your LEDs.
What Does Fire Rated Mean?
The safety feature of this downlight comes from the fact that it is fire rated. In any given building, the ceiling acts as a barrier that protects you from fires spreading between floors.
Cutting a hole in the ceiling compromises this barrier. Even once the downlight has been installed, there will still be tiny gaps between the hole and the edge of the light. This allows air and heat to pass through.
Fire rated products however are made from intumescent material – it expands as it gets hotter. This fills the gaps left by the hole, making it air tight and thus prevents the spread of fire.
This protection will last up to 90 minutes – more than adequate time for you to safely evacuate your premises and for emergency services to extinguish the blaze.
Although fire rated products tend to cost a little more than standard downlights, the added safety benefits make the cost more than worth it. There are some ways you can negate this extra cost though.

The Necessary Additions
There are a few bits you’ll need in order to make use of your MR16 downlight.
The first is obviously a spotlight. You can check out our entire range of MR16 spotlights here, though we’ve got some recommendations too.
Our 6W MR16 Spotlight 27 SMD is a great all round option. It only uses 6W of energy, yet its 27 surface mounted diodes (SMDs) shine at a maximum brightness of 450 lumens. The beam angle of 120o makes it great for general illumination.
A slightly different choice would be our 6W MR16 LED Bulb COB. It uses the same amount of electricity but provides 400 lumens. The main difference though is the beam angle – this spotlight is narrower at 60o because it uses a COB instead of SMDs.
As mentioned before, you will also need an LED driver to use MR16 fittings. This is because MR16s operate at considerably lower voltages than more commonly used GU10s. The main effect this has is that MR16s are safer to use in places like the bathroom, otherwise, GU10s are more convenient to use everywhere else in the house.
For this, we would recommend our 6W LED Driver. It has adequate capacity to handle the power requirements of the 2 featured bulbs and ensures you get the most out of your spotlight.
