Manufactured by Mirrorstone, this fire rated downlight only requires a 65mm hole to be cut in your ceiling for use, with its diameter a relatively small 85mm. It’s finished in brass so you’ll love the way it looks too. You’ll have a couple of options open to you when you buy this GU10 downlight, and the first is whether you want dimmable light or not. Please bear in mind that if you do choose this option, you will need a trailing edge dimmer. Existing leading edge dimmers can’t be guaranteed to work and could even damage the LEDs. The other option you’ll have is a choice of colour temperatures. A selection of warm white (3000K), and cool white (6000K) is open to you. Warm white is great for areas that need to feel comfortable like the living room or bedroom, whereas cool white is probably better for areas that need to be well lit like the kitchen or office. In any given building, the ceiling acts as a barrier between different floors and helps slow the spread of any fires. This GU10 fixed downlight requires a hole to be cut in the ceiling though, weakening the level of protection. Although the downlight itself fills the hole, there are tiny gaps between the edge of the cutting and the downlight itself. This allows air and heat to pass through. Fire rated products however are made from intumescent material, so it swells up as it gets hotter. This fills the gaps up and makes the cutting hole air tight, restoring the safety levels that your ceiling had prior to installation. This protection is good for up to 90 minutes, which is more than enough time for you to evacuate your premises and call emergency services. Although fire rated products generally cost more than standard downlights, we feel that the extra money is well worth it for the safety benefits alone.
