Customising Your Panel Light
Before you buy your panel light, there are a couple of options you’ll have to cater it just for your needs.
One of these is whether you want dimmable light or not – which allows you to alter the brightness at any time. This not only gives you flexibility, but it also lets you save electricity too.
You should know though that in order to use dimmable LEDs, you will need a trailing edge dimmer. Using a leading edge dimmer – the type you would find in most homes – might not work and could even damage the bulbs in a worst case scenario.
The other choice you’ll have is what kind of colour temperature you would like. Colour temperature is measured in Kelvins, and is essentially the perceived warmth of a light quantified into a value.
You’ll have 2 options – warm white (3000K) and cool white (6000K). Warm white is very similar to traditional halogens, and helps create a cosy atmosphere. This makes it great to use in places like the living room or bedroom.
Cool white on the other hand is far brighter and shines with an icier shade. This is better suited for areas that need to be well lit such as the office or warehouse.

Out of the many reasons to start using LEDs, the green advantages stand out because of the current climate, and the incentives to be as environmentally friendly as we can.
We’ve already mentioned how much more efficient LEDs are. This is because of how much smarter they are with how they use the electricity that you pay for.
LEDs convert 90% of their energy to actual light, with the remaining 10% lost to heat. Compare this to halogens – which only manage to use around 20% of their energy to provide light. This means up to 80% is lost to heat!
