The house should be left where hibernating hedgehogs won't be disturbed, by a wall or fence and near plant cover. The entrance needs to face away from north or north-east direction to protect from cold winds. Hedgehogs will find their own nesting materials themselves. Don't be tempted to move the box to see if it is occupied - a nesting mother could be frightened and leave her young.
